Term
What is the origin of the anterior pituitary?
Definition
From Rathke's Pouch....the posterior portion of the stomadeum that starts growing toward the brain
Term
Where does the posterior pituitary come from?
Definition
the diencephalon grows down
Term
Which hormones are produced from the anterior lobe?
Definition
Growth hormone, prolactin and trophic hormones (TSH, ACTH, ICTH, FSH and LH)
Term
What does the Pars Intermedia produce?
Definition
MSH (melanocyte stimulating hormones)
Term
What does the posterior lobe produce?
Definition
ADH and Oxytocin
Term
What is Empty Sella Syndrome?
Definition
any condition that destroys the pituitary and cause the sella to appear empty at autopsy....symptoms depend on how much parenchyma is lost
Term
T/F Most pituitary neoplasms are benign?
Definition
T....most are benign, but most are sitting in the sella turcica right behind the optic chiasm where the tumor grows largecausing headaches, nausea, vomiting, death, dizziness and papillodoma
Term
What is the most common pituitary tumor of children?
Definition
Craniopharyngioma
Term
What tumor does this describe: usually originates from a duct, gets large tissues that are full of cysts, acts like a brain tumor and microscopically looks like a developing tooth
Definition
Craniopharyngioma
Term
What pituitary tumor does this describe: most common pituitary tumor in the adult, get large and destroy the remainder of the pituitary gland and the brain?
Definition
Chromophobe adenoma
Term
What pituitary tumor does this describe: produces tropic hormones, does not get that big?
Definition
Basophil adenoma
Term
What tumor does this describe: produces growth hormone and prolactin?
Definition
Acidophil adenoma
Term
Describe dwarfism and its cause(s) are/is?
Definition
Syndrome that causes hypopituitarism when there is a lack of growth hormone in children...most often caused by craniopharyngioma
Term
Describe Simmonds disease, its cause and effects?
Definition
Failure of trophic hormones as an adult that causes hypopituitarism. Chromophobe adenoma usually causes this but also seen with Sheehans post partum necrosis. Adrenal glands don't work, melanocytes pale, breasts disappear, lose body hair and become pale
Term
What is posterior pituitary syndrome?
Definition
something that destroys the posterior pituitary. Usually caused by craniopharyngioma, langerhans cell dx or it is idiopathic. Results in no ADH being produced and causes diabetes insipidus
Term
What are the 2 causes of hyperpituitarism?
Definition
giantism and acromegaly
Term
What is giantism?
Definition
pituitary produced too much growth hormone in a child before epiphysis close.\ and from an acidophil adenoma (produces GH) which destroys the rest of the pituitary. (Heart can't keep up with that big of a person therefore die of high output failure)
Term
What is acromegaly?
Definition
excessive growth hormone after closed epiphysis in adults...the person grows in girth...only acral (hands and feet) parts become lengthened. Get prognathic jaw, macroglossia and course facial features.
