Cards

Term

Opaque

Definition

lets NO light through

absorbs most or all of the light

cannot see other objects through it

ex. wood of a door

brick wall

Term
Transparent
Definition

nearly ALL the light passes through

you CLEARLY can see the objects on the other side

ex. glass

clear plastic

Term
Translucent
Definition

SOME light is absorbed

SOME light passes through

objects on other side are visible...but not clear

ex. wax paper

frosted glass

Term

Regular

Reflection

Definition

reflect light ways in a regular way (not scattered)

ex. parallel rays reflect parallel to the mirror

Term

diffuse

reflection

Definition
rough surface causes light rays to be reflected in many directions
Term
Refraction
Definition

bending of light waves due to a change in speed

light wave travels from one medium (like air) to another (like water)...due to the different densities of the mediums...the speed of the light wave changes and bends

the greater the speed the more the light wave bends

Term

colors of light

and

wavelength

Definition

white light is a mixture of colors

each color of light is a light wave with different wavelength

Red = longest wavelength

Violet = shortest wavelength

Term

Primary Light Colors

Rays of Light

Definition

Primary Light Colors = Red, Green, Blue

mixing:

Red + Green = Yellow

Green + Blue =  Cyan

Blue + Red = Magenta

Red + Green + Blue = WHITE

all the colors together make WHITE light

Term

Primary Pigment Colors

materials like paint

Definition

Primary Pigment Colors = Yellow, Cyan, Magenta

mixing:

Yellow + Cyan = Green

Cyan + Magenta = Purple

Magenta + Yellow = Red

Yellow + Cyan + Magenta = BLACK

all the colors together make BLACK light

Term
absorb
Definition

to take in

to soak up (like a sponge)

Term
reflected
Definition

bounces off a surface

not absorbed

Term

Term

Concave

MIRROR

Definition

surface curved inward...like a bowl or spoon

cause light rays to come together, "cave"-in, converge

light rays travel parallel to optical axis

hit the mirror

reflect off - pass through FOCAL Point on the optical axis

Image: can be upright OR inverted

can be smaller OR larger than object

Term

Convex

MIRROR

Definition

surface curves outward...like back of a spoon

cause light waves to spread out/apart, diverge

Image: is always upright and smaller than the object

Term
Light Rays
Definition
do NOT need a medium to travel
Term
Optical Axis
Definition

a straight line drawn normal

to the center

of a convex mirror

Term

speed of light is

300,000 km/s

question: if light travels at 300,000 km/s and Earth is 150 million km from the Sun, how long does it take light to travel from the Sun to the Earth?

Definition

Time = distance / speed

Time = 150,000,000 km

        300,000 km/s

=150,000,000 km  *  1 second

               1              300,000 km

=500 seconds

= 8.3 minutes

Term
Microscope
Definition

uses convex lenses

forms an enlarged image on the objective lense

the image then enlarges again on the eyepiece lense (Ocular lense)

can magnify objects as large as 2,500 times

Term
Teloscope
Definition

uses large concave mirror or gather image
