Term
What is the function of the outer ear?
Definition
First stop on the pathway of sound from the environment to it's perception in the brain.

Serves as a protector for the fine structures found more deeply in the auditory pathway.

Localization of sound.
Term
What does the pinna do for the human?
Definition
Collects and funnels sound into the ear canal. (Most efficient with sounds from the front.

Due to it's shape and all of the crevices, ridges, and depressions, it boosts high frequency wavelengths.

Helps with localization of those frequencies.

Conchal Bowl is a cavity that provides a resonance of aprox. 5000Hz.
Term
Resonant Frequency
Definition
The frequency at which a mass vibrates with the least amount of external force; the natural frequency of vibration of a mass.
Term
Functions of the ear canal?
Definition
Directs sound to the tympanic membrane.

Protects the TM with it's narrow opening and relatively long length.

Ceruminous glands produce cerumen which is toxic to insects

Hair follicles move in ciliary motion causing foriegn obects and debris to move out.
Term
Describe the shape of the ear canal.
Definition
A tube shaped cavity that is closed at one end.
Term
The resonant frequency of the ear canal depends on what?
Definition
The length of the canal and the wavelength of he incoming sound.
Term
The resonant frequency of the ear canal is what fraction of the length of the tube?
Definition
1/4
Term
The processing of sound and speech, on it's way to the brain begins at?
Definition
The pinna
Term
Resonance
Definition
The ability of a mass to vibrate at a particular frequency with a minimum application of external force.
Term
What is he most important frequency range for speech understanding?
Definition
1500-7000Hz
