Term
 1. Force
Definition
A push or a pull on an object.
Term
 2. Net Force
Definition
The overall force on an object when all the individual forces acting on it are added together. (if the net force is not zero - the object will move)
Term
 3. Unbalanced Force
Definition
A non-zero net force which changes an object's motion.
Term
 4. Balanced Force
Definition
Equal forces acting on an object in opposite directions. (balanced force = no movement)
Term
 5. Newton
Definition
A unit of measure that equals the force required to accelerate 1 kg of mass at 1 m/s2.   (kg m/s2)
Term
 6. Weight
Definition
A measure of the force of gravity acting on an object.   W = M x A (due to gravity)
Term
 7. Inertia
Definition
The tendency of an object to resist a change in motion.
Term
 8. Mass
Definition
The amount of matter in an object.
Term
 9. Newton's 1st Law
Definition
An object at rest will remain at rest and an object in motion will stay in motion unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.
Term
 10. Momentum
Definition
 The product of an object's mass and velocity.   p = m v
Term
 11. Friction
Definition
The force that two surfaces exert on each other when they rub against each other.
Term
 12. Free fall
Definition
The motion of a falling object when the only force acting on it is gravity.
Term
 13. Projectile
Definition
 An object that is thrown.
Term
 14. Air resistance
Definition
The fluid friction experienced by objects falling through the air.   (an upward force)
Term
 15. Fluid friction
Definition
Friction that occurs as an object moves through a fluid (air or water).
Term
 16. Static friction
Definition
Friction between objects that are not moving.
Term
 17. Sliding friction
Definition
Friction that occurs when one solid surface slides over another.
Term
 18. Rolling Friction
Definition
Friction that occurs when an object rolls over a surface.
Term
 19. Gravity
Definition
The force that pulls objects towards each other.
Term
 20. Satellite
Definition
Any object that orbits around another object in space.
Term
 21. Terminal velocity
Definition
The maximum velocity a falling object can achieve.   When air resistance equals the force of gravity, the object continues to fall but eventually keeps a constant velocity.
Term
 22. Centripetal force
Definition
A force that causes an object to move in a circle.
Term
 23. Newton's 2nd Law
Definition
An object's acceleration depends on its mass and on the net force acting on it. F = MA
Term
 24. Law of Universal Gravitation
Definition
The force of gravity acts between all objects in the universe. Any two objects in the universe attract each other.
Term
 25. Law of Conservation of Momentum
Definition
The total momentum of any group of objects remains the same unless outside forces act on the object (such as friction).
Term
 26. Newton's 3rd Law
Definition
For every action there is an equal but opposite reaction.
