Term
dipole
Definition
A molecule that has both negatively and positively charged poles caused by the unequal distribution of electrons
Term
polar molecule
Definition
A molecule that has partially charged electrical poles
Term
dissociation
Definition
The process whereby a solvent breaks up an ionic solid
Term
soluble
Definition
dissolvable
Term
solubility
Definition
The maximum amount of a solute that can dissolve in a given amount of solvent under normal conditions
Term
miscibility
Definition

The property that allows two liquids to be

soluble in each other

Term
precipitate
Definition
A solid formed during a reaction; insoluble in water
Term
saturated
Definition

Containing the maximum amount of a solute

that can be dissolved in a given amount of

solvent under normal conditions

Term
supersaturated
Definition

Having dissolved more than the normal

amount of solute in a given amount of solvent

Term
insoluble
Definition
substances that cannot be broken apart by water molecules and will not go into a solution
Term
Henry's law
Definition
The greater the pressure on a liquid, the greater the amount of gas that will remain dissolved in that liquid at any given temperature
Term
Factors That Affect Solubility (p. 232)
Definition

1. The nature of the solute and the solvent

*Like dissolves like:  the more alike the solute & the solvent the more soluble they will be

2. Temperature

*Solids in liquids:  Solubility generally increases

                   with rise in temperature

*Liquids in liquids:  solubility generally  increases

                    with rise in temperature

* Gases in liquids:  solubility decreases with

                           increase in  temperature

3.  Pressure

*Gases in liquids:  solubility increases with pressure

*Liquids or solids in liquids:  no effect
