Definition
MOA: Non-selective inhibition of COX I&II (prostaglandins)
USE: anti-inflam, antipyuretic, analgesic
SE: gastric ulcers, platelet supression, acute renal failure

Two Types:
  • 1st Generation: Non-Selective
  • 2nd Generation: CoxII Selective

Ist Generation NSAID
Definition
COX-1 has a "house-keeping" role in regulating many normal physiological processes. As in the stomach lining, where prostaglandins prevent the stomach mucosa from being eroded by its own acid. When non-selective COX-1/COX-2 inhibitors (Ist Gen. NSAIDS) lower stomach prostaglandin levels and cause ulcers of the stomach or duodenum and bleeding.
  • Aspirin
  • Acetaminophen (Tylenol)
  • Indomethacin (Indocin)
  • Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin); Naproxen (Aleve); Ketorolac (Toradol)

Indications:
  • Fever
  • Chronic Pain
  • Migrain
  • Myocardial Infraction
  • Rheumatic fever
  • Kawasaki's Disease
Contraindication & SE:
  • GI ulcers & Bleeding
  • Renal Failure (Uricosuric)
  • Increased breath rate & depth
  • Don't take w/ ETOH
  • Given w/viral infx causes Reye's
  • Syndrome in kids
  • dizziness, tinnitis, vertigo

Tylenol (Acetaminaphen)
Definition
  • Unlike NSAIDs, tylenol is not particularly effective against pain from inflammatory disorders.
  • Extra Strength=500mg
  • Ultra = extra strength+cafenine for migraine relief
