Omeprazole (Prilosec)

o   May cause hypomagnesemia. Monitor serum magnesium prior to and periodically during therapy.

Famotidine (pepsid)

o   May cause false-positive results for urine protein; test with sulfosalicylic acid.

Lansoprazole (Prevacid)

o   May cause hypomagnesemia. Monitor serum magnesium prior to and periodically during therapy.

Ondansetron (Zofran)

o   Carbamazepine, phenytoin, and rifampin may ↓ levels.

Dronabinol (Marinol)

o   physical dependence, psychological dependence (high doses or prolonged therapy)

Polyethylene glycol (GoLytely)

o   allergic reactions (rare)

Docusate sodium (Colace)

o   urine discoloration

Magnesium hydroxide (Milk of magnesia)/ Maalox

o   Monitor serum phosphate, potassium, and calcium levels periodically during chronic use. May cause ↑ serum calcium and ↓ serum phosphate concentrations.

calcium carbonate (Tums)

o   May cause decreased serum phosphate concentrations with excessive and prolonged use. When used to treat hyperphosphatemia in renal failure patients, monitor phosphate levels.

Simethicone

o   Drops can be mixed with 30 mL of cool water, infant formula, or other liquid as directed. Shake well before using.

Bisacodyl

o   protein-losing enteropathy, tetany (with chronic use)

·      Lab values to monitor: May cause increased serum glucose and decreased serum potassium with prolonged use.

Psyllium

·      Lab values to monitor: May cause elevated blood glucose levels with prolonged use of preparations containing sugar.

Diphenoxylate/atropine (Lomotil)

o   may cause increased serum amylase concentrations.

Loperamide (Imodium)

o   allergic reactions

Mineral oil

o   diarrhea, anal irritation, rectal seepage of mineral oil
