Term
Describe the action of anti-inflammatory agents.
Definition
Agents that block a step in the pathway leading from tissue injury to body response of inflammation
Term
What are the classes of anti-inflammatory drugs?
Definition
Salicylates and Non-sterioidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID)
Term
Describe the link between salicylates and Reye's syndrome.
Definition
unknown cause but deterioration of body occurs, increases liver enzymes, increased ammonia, fatty degeneration of liver, cerebral edema, leads to death; also why children w/chicken pox can't have it (liver enzymes)
Term
List the signs and symptoms of salicylate toxicity.
Definition
increased respiratory rate & depth, hemorrhage, convulsion, collapse, pulmonary edema
Term
Describe aspirin dosage for 80+ yrs. old.
Definition
81/mg a day for women: reduces risk of stroke, men: reduce risk of heart attack
Term
Describe what an enteric coated aspirin does?
Definition
Coated so it goes straight to small intestine
Term
What is different about the new NSAIDs?
Definition
the selectively inhibit COX 2 (celeoxib) so less inflammation at injury site and fewer side effects
Term
What are the prototypes for NSAIDs?
Definition
Ibuprofen and acetminophen
Term
Discuss the use and misuse of acetaminophen.
Definition
More than 40% of liver problems in US are due to tylenol over use. 70% of tylenol overdose thought to be intention, 30% accidental; elderly at more risk.
Term
Describe the adverse effects of acetaminophen
Definition
acute liver failure, often used for suicide, if w/cumidin, will increasing bleeding time;
Term
Interferons: what are they? what is the MOA?
Definition
chemicals that are produced by cells that have been invaded by viruses, made by recombinant technology; MOA: prevent viral replication inside other cells, stimulating receptor sites on non-invaded cells to produce anti-viral proteins which helps to block entry into cells, lessen tumor growth and replication
Term
Interleukins: What are they? What is the MOA?
Definition
chemical messengers secreted by T cells to affect other leukocytes; specifically interleukin 2 which stimulates production of more T cells and increases activity of B cells, cytotoxic cells and natural killer cells; MOA: mimics action of natural IL 2
