Mechanism of Action

(thiazides)

Works in the distal convoluted tubule to

- prevent reabsorption of water

- Block reabsorption of Na and Cl

- Promotes diuresis when renal function is not impaired

Therapeutic Uses

(thiazide diuretics)

- are often the first choice to treat essential hypertension

- used for edema of mild to moderate heart failure and liver and kidney failure

- used to reduce urine production in patients with diabetes insipidus

- promotes reabsorption of calcium

Complications

(thiazides )

dehydration, hyponatremia, hypokalemia, hypochloremia, hypomagnesemia, hyperglycemia, hyperuricemia, increase LDL cholesterol
