Persian Gulf War of 1991 was fought in early 1991 between Iraq and a coalition of 39 countries organized mainly by the United States and the United Nations (UN). The U.S. government called the war Operation Desert Storm. It took place chiefly in Iraq and the tiny oil-rich nation of Kuwait. These two countries lie together at the northern end of the Persian Gulf.

Background to the WarFrom 1980 to 1988, Iraq had fought a war with its neighbor Iran. Iraq suffered serious economic damage in the Iran-Iraq War. Nevertheless, it emerged from that war as the second-strongest military power in the Middle East. Only the Jewish state of Israel was stronger.
