Term
General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS)
Definition

Syndrome discovered by Selye. Consists of three stages,

1) alarm stage - CNS is aroused and body defenses are mobilized

2) stage of resistance/adaptation - mobilization contributes to flight or fight

3) stage of exhaustion - continuous stress causes the breakdown of compensatory mechanisms and homeostasis, marks the onset of diseases of adaptation

Term
Epinephrine
Definition

One of the catecholamines associated with GAS.

Decreases glucose uptake in the muscles and other organs and decreases insulin release from the pancreas resulting in hyperglycemia (preparing the body to take physical action: fight or flee). Chronic elevation is immunosuppressive.

Term
Cortisol
Definition
Mobilizes substances needed for cellular metabolism. Stimulation of gluconeogenesis (formation of glucose from non-carbohydrates). Cortisol reduces protein synthesis in nonhepatic tissues which dietary protein cannot replace.  Promotes lipogenesis in certain regions of the body (abdomen, trunk, face).
Term
Stress-related diseases and conditions
Definition
Coronary artery disease, hypertension, stroke, tension headaches, backaches, Rheumatoid arthritis, Asthma, Hay fever, Ulcer, IBS, Nausea and vomiting, ulcerative colitis, Impotence, Eczema, acne, type 2 diabetes, fatigue and lethargy, overeating, depression, insomnia, impaired learning and memory.
