Term
Normal breast ductules:
Definition
there is only a single layer of epithelial cells surrounded by a discontinuous layer of myoepithelial cells.
Term
Fibrocystic disease:
Definition
blue-colored cysts filled with ductal secretions, and white areas of fibrosis. Microscopically you have cysts that are dilated and near them you have adenosis which is an increase in the number of ductules per lobule. They often have microcalcifications detected through mammography. Eosinophilic cytoplasm of the cells around the ducts is indicative of a BENIGN lesion.
Term
Gynecomastia:
Definition
The male breast contains only ducts, lobules do not develop. Large amounts of fibrous stroma surround the ducts, which is paler immediately around the ducts and more pink outside. Also have hyperplastic ductal epithelium >2 layers.
Term
Fibroadenoma:
Definition
sharply circumscribed, homogenous without hemorrhage or necrosis, rubbery texture and can be moved around in the breast substance. Microscopically: Ducts and dutules within the fibroadenoma are compressed into linear shapes by the cellular intralobular stroma.
Term
Intraductal Papilloma:
Definition
fleshy tumor from duct wall within a dilated duct, usually in lactiferous sinuses, network of fibrovascular cores, each lined by a layer of cuboidal cells, ductules surrounded by fibrous stroma
Term
Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS):
Definition
The malignant cells of DCIS are limited to the ducts and ductules that compose a lobule, ducts or ductules are distended by malignant cells that have formed secondary lumens, necrosis is present and you can observe aggregate of lymphocytes
Term
High grade DCIS:
Definition
foci of the comedocarcinoma and you have dystrophic calcification and distension of the ducts by pleomorphic cancer cells, this is HIGH GRADE and progresses to invasive carcinoma!
Term
Ductal carcinoma in situ, micropapillary type:
Definition
Malignant cells have formed epithelial tufts that project into the duct lumens
Term
Invasive ductal carcinoma:
Definition
KNOW the macro/gross – it’s got a very irregular margin with a foci of hemorrhage on the cut surface, nests of cells extend into the adjacent adipose tissue, DESMOPLASTIC stroma gives the neoplasm hard consistency and the mass is immobile,
Term
LAB 4
Definition
Term
Teratomas:
Definition
represent 10-15% of ovarian tumors, are benign but need to be removed. Can have endodermal and mesodermal tissues – cartilage, thyroid, cerebellar…lots of stuff!
Term
Mucinous cystadenoma:
Definition
numerous smaller cysts filled with mucinous material, cysts are lined by columnar cells. Ovarian stroma separates the cysts; there isn't any evidence of a stromal reaction indicative of stromal invasion by the columnar cells
Term
Papillary serous cystadenocarcinoma:
Definition
40% of malignant ovarian neoplasms, papillary projections, papillae contain fibrovascular cores, psammoma body, has STROMAL INVASION! Mitotic figures and pleomorphism => UNLIKE MUCINOUS CYSTADENOMAS!
Term
Granulosa cell tumor:
Definition
yellow cut surface secondary to an increased lipid content. Granulosa cell tumors can produce large amounts of estrogen => endometrial hyperplasia and endometrial carcinoma. HALLMARK IS THE GRANULOSA CELL COFFEE BEAN NUCLEI SURROUNDING THE CALL-EXNER BODIES KNOW THIS!
Term
Dysgerminoma:
Definition
histologically the same as seminoma of the testicle: lymphocytes are dispersed throughout the neoplasm. The dysgerminoma cells are arranged in sheets or cords, malignant but good progx, lymphocytes often present
Term
Endodermal sinus tumor:
Definition
(yolk sac tumor) => alveolar glandular pattern with cuboidal epithelial cells that surround SCHILLER DUVAL perivascular bodies in the connective tissue. KEY: ELEVATED LEVELS OF ALPHAFETOPROTEIN!!!! Highly malignant and metastasizes early w/ invasion!
Term
Seminoma:
Definition
replaces the normal testicular parenchyma…thin cords of cells separated by lymphocytes
Term
Testicular infarct:
Definition
twisting of the spermatic cord, leading to intense vascular engorgement and venous infarction…results in the ghosts of the seminiferous tubules…ischemic necrosis emergency but can be reversible within 6 hrs, hemorrhagic!
Term
Germinal cell aplasia (Sertoli only syndrome):
Definition
seminiferous tubules are smaller than normal, only sertolis remain and you have azoospermia.
