Term
Vascular Changes in Inflammation
Definition
Dilatation

Increased vascular permeability

Transcytosis(VEGF)

Emigration of Leukocytes

Statis(Vascular congestion)
Term
Transudate vs Exudate
Definition
Transudate: Mostly fluid, low protein.
Cirrhosis of liver, CHF. In cirrhosis liver cannot make albumin(nothing to hold water in blood)

Euxudate: Fluid and high protein. Vasodilation and statis. Inflammation. Cancer can cause
Term
Lymph Nodes enlarge through what mechanism?
Definition
Hyperplasia
Term
Lymphangitis vs Lympadenitis
Definition
Lymphangitis: Lymphatic vessels inflamed
Red streaks near skin wound.

Lymphadenitis: Lymp NODES inflamed. Painful enlargment of lymph nodes.
Term
Recruitment of leukocytes to sites of infection and injury
Definition
Margination(move outside)
Rolling(selectins)
Adhesion(Integrins)
Migration through endothelium

Edema -> Neutrophils -> monocytes/macrophages
Term
Chronic Granulomatous Disease
Definition
Defect in NADPH Oxidase

Can't generate ROS for oxidative burst

Can phagocytize but not degrade
Term
Chediak-Higashi Syndrome
Definition
Lysosomal traffcking protein mutation
Decreased leukocyte function

Lysosomes cant fuse with phagosomes

Low platelet counts
Albinism
Term
Resident cells in inflammation
Definition
Mast cells and tissue macrophages

Release histamine, leukotrienes and cytokines TNF & IL-1
Term
Acute Inflammation Cytokines
Definition

TNF

Sources: Macrophages, Mast Cells, T-cells

Effect: ↑Endothelial adhesion molecules, ↑Cytokines; systemic effects

IL-1

Sources: Macrophages, endothelial cells

Effects: Similar to TNF, Greater role in fever.

IL-6

Sources: Macrophages

Effect: Acute-Phase response(systemic effects)

Term

Activated Hagemon Factor(XIIa)

Activated by?

Activates what?

Definition

Factor(XIIa)

Activated By collagen

Activates:

  • Kinin(pain, Bradykinin)
  • Clotting system → Thrombin
  • Fibrinolytic System → plasmin and degrades fibri to produce fibrinopeptides which induce inflammation
  • Complement system → anaphylatoxins(C3A,C5A)

Term

Acute Inflammation can progress to?

Definition

Acute Inflammation progress to

Resolution: Regains normal function

Healing: Fibrosis, collagen deposition, loss of function

Chronic Inflammation: Angiogenesis, Mononuclear cell

Term
Fibrinous Inflammation
Definition

Fibrinous Inflammation

  • ↑Vascular permeability aloows fibrinogen to pass through
  • Fibrin is formed and deposited in extracellular space
  • Fibrinous Exudate common in inflammation of meninges, pericardium, pleura
  • If fibrin not removed by macrophages it stimulates ingrowth of fibroblasts and blood vessels → Scar Tissue
Term

Suppurative / Purulent inflammation

(abscess)

Definition

Suppurative / purulant Inflammation

  • Production of pus or purulent exudate  consisting of neutrophils, liquefactive necrosis, edema fluid
  • Abscesses have a central region of nerotic leukocytes and tissue cells
  • Outside of this is neutrophils & fibroblastic proliferation.
Term

Ulcer Vs Erosion

Definition

Ulcer

Violation of muscularis Mucosa.

Regeneration not possible, Scaring

Erosion

No Violation of Muscularis Mucosa

Regeneration Possible

Term
Acute Phase Proteins
Definition

Acute Phase Proteins

  • C-RP
  • Fibrinogen
  • Serum Amyloid A
