-       infant needs to feed in order to grow to next life stage

-       infant stay near hosts for constant/adequate food source

-       don’t have wings to fly until adult, so young always near food source

-       adults capable of flying to find mates

let clean bug feed on patient, wait a week or few, then test to see     if bug has developed into a positive vector

            - if bug becomes positive vector, then you know it contracted parasite from patient, therefore the patient is positive for having disease
