Signs and Symptoms
Definition
  • Pain (usually in legs) caused by intermittent caudication, ischemia causes the pain, occurs mostly with movement
  • Parethesia
  • Thin, shiny, and hairless skin at affected area due to lack of oxygen
  • Diminished pulses in affected areas
  • Extremity is cool and pale
  • Advanced disease will have consistent pain that is more common at night (do not elevate affected area)
  • All complications are caused by lack of blood flow/oxygen

  • Ankle/brachial index -- Ankle systolic divided by the brachial systolic, normal is 0.91-1.3, the higher the number, the more severe
  • Duplex imaging (ultrasound) -- detects the amount of blood flowing in an area

  • Medications -- aspirin, plavix, anticoagulants, ACE inhibitors, trental (decreases blood viscosity to help with pain)
