Term
Cherem
Definition
The Ban: If it breaths, kill it. If it burns, burn it. If it neither breaths nor burns, give it to God. It is a holy war. The spoils are consecrated. This is judgment, not murder.
Term
Achan
Definition
Achan's disobedience brought failure to Israel. Achan was like a cancer to the people. They were very thorough in removing the cancer.
Term
Shechem
Definition
Maybe hebrews had already been living at Shechem. In any case, they had a revival service instead of a war.
Term
Judges
Definition
- Primarily Military Leaders
- Arbitrate some legal matters
- Came to power in periods of emerency
- Charismatic leaders (no dynasties)
- Authority was limited to one or a few tribes and not all Israel
- Can be spiritual in personal life, but they were primarily military leaders (God can work with whatever he has)
Term
Deborah
Definition
A prophetess and judge. It seems like there was no issue with her being a judge.
Term
Jephthah
Definition
The incarnation of syncretism.
His father Gilead: if his mother was a prostitute, who was his father? Someone from Gilead…
The son of a shrine prostitute
The only example of human sacrifice to YHWH in all the Old Testament
He was likely indoctrinated in Canaanite religion
Term
Samuel
Definition
A judge, the last of the judges and the first of the prophets. He was raised a priest. Like a prophet, he has a miraculous birth story and military victories. As a prophet, he was the voice of God the the king and people. He anointed the first two kings of Israel.
Term
Saul
Definition
A tragic figure. He was the first king of Israel. He was very successful early in his reign, but he turned his heart away from God and never repented. In the end, he died pitiful and generally unloved.
Term
Philistines
Definition
Possibly of the Sea People
Similar potter to Greece
Major adversary of Israel during the united monarchy
Term
David
Definition
Much better politician than Saul - he naturally did the things that advanced his political career. Conquered Jerusalem. A man after God's own heart.
Term
“Davidic Covenant”
Definition
One from David's line would always sit upon the throne (2 Sam. 7:1-29)
Took on popular significance (even greater than Sinaitic Covenant)
God also told David that his son would build the Temple.
Term
Solomon
Definition
From peace. Ironic. Came to power in a storm. He was more like the kings around them instead of a king of Israel. His reign was the high point of Israel's glory. Renowned as the "father of wisdom" in Israel. As David had been the model king, Solomon became the model of how not to be king. It was wrong to use the kingship for the king, it needed to be used for God.
Term
Amos
Definition
Likely the first prophet to write anything down. He was from Judah, but preached to Israel. He was thought a traitor, smart mouthed the high priest, and (according to tradition) got killed. During his time there was "face" worship and idolatry. He spoke for social justice. He spoke against "health and wealth" gospel. The grade book is lacking. And you're not special!
Term
Hosea
Definition
From Israel to Israel. He was not critical, he was heartbroken. Children are Jezreel, Not-Loved, and Not-Mine. Israel had become so disobedient he didn't even know he had done wrong. Hosea is not like Amos. He doesn’t speak from an objective position. He speak to his own people. He speaks from his heart. But Israel will be completely wiped out.
Term
Micah
Definition
Same time as Isaiah, but different background. Message much like Amos: social justice, nominal faith.
Term
Isaiah
Definition
Unlike Amos, Isaiah can demand an audience with the king and he gets it. Maybe he was a court prophet. He understands Judah’s foreign policy. Repent and make sure nobody repents.
Term
Maher-shalal-hash-boz
Definition
“The plunderer hastens, the prey quickens” – if the squirrel keeps running, he’s fine, Ahaz is the squirrel, Tig is the car.
Term
722
Definition
722 – (TEST ALERT) When Samaria (what was left of the Northern Kingdom) fell
This happened by the time of Immanuel’s Bar-Mitzvah
Term
Hezekiah
Definition
One of two completely good kings of Judah. He reinstated Passover. Due to Isaiah's prophesy, he stayed put instead of joining a rebellion against Assyria. Sure enough, it turned out well. Then, under Sennacherib, he rebels. He spends 4 years preparing, but still looses. Isaiah speaks against his preparations.
