Term
What are the Rigid material?
Definition
"Rohadur, Polydor, and Polypropylene"
Term
What is Rohadur?
Definition
Grandfather of rigid materials. Burnt orange. Thickness in mm’s. No longer manufactured. Easy to heat in office. Will not deform. Fracture!
Term
What is Polydor?
Definition
"Replacement for rohadur. More colors (fluorescents). Thickness in mm’s. Thought to have problems w/ strength. Easy to press into + cast and heat in office. Will not deform. Fractures, usually at RF post or at extrinsic FF post."
Term
What is Polypropylene?
Definition
"Polyethylene. Inexpensive. Rigid, Semi flexible or Flexible. Thicker the material, more rigid. Thickness in fractions of inches. Difficult to press or heat in office. Over time lose shape. More tolerable. "
Term
What is the most popular orthotic material?
Definition
Polypropylene
Term
When should Polypropylene NOT be used?
Definition
When strict control calls for a rigid device.
Term
T/F Polypropylene is inexpensive?
Definition
TRUE
Term
What are the disadvantages of Polypropylene?
Definition
Difficult to heat and have to use a new orthotic if you screw up.
Term
What are the TL 2100 or other Graphite Composite materials?
Definition
Fiberglass composite. Expensive! Mostly rigid. Thinner than rohadur. 1.0-1.5 mm’s. Front edge can cut into shoe. Fractures. Heating difficult.
Term
What is the biggest advantage to Graphite Composite materials?
Definition
Material is thinner than Rohadur 1.0 mm.
Term
T/F Graphite Composite material has a wide heating range?
Definition
FALSE
Term
What are other Graphite Composite materials?
Definition
"TL-Blue, TL-61, Superform. All are variants of same concept."
Term
What is the most expensive material?
Definition
Graphite Composite material
Term
What is Korex?
Definition
Cork and latex. Accommodative and Extrinsic Posts. Easy to work and grind. Flexible that does not deform under compression. (Leather Rubber Butters)
Term
What is Plastazote?
Definition
"Closed Cell Material. Accommodative. Compression areas of greatest pressure. Easy to work and grind. Insoles (used to find areas of greatest pressure) Easily heat moldable. Temporary orthotics. Different densities. Higher density, higher resistance to compression."
Term
What is Sponge?
Definition
"Many different types. Good shock absorption. Different densities, thicknesses. Good shock absorption. (used in arch of rigid orthotic to provide greater strength and less flexibility."
Term
What are examples of Sponge materials in orthotics?
Definition
"PPT (Podiatric Protective Technology), Poron, Pelite"
Term
What is Spenco?
Definition
Neoprene w/ a fabric cover that disperses shearing forces. Good for athletes. Decrease calluses and blisters.
Term
What are some Top Covers?
Definition
Leather and Naugahyde
Term
What is the most popular Top cover?
Definition
Naugahyde (pleather)
Term
What is Naugahyde?
Definition
A synthetic material (vinyl like). Strong that will not absorb sweat. Easy to clean.
Term
T/F Top Covers are a necessary component of any orthotic?
Definition
FALSE
Term
What are the 3 ways the top cover is placed on the orthotic?
Definition
"On the orthotic itself., Extending under the met heads, and extending under the toes."
Term
What is real benefit of a Top Cover?
Definition
Extending the top cover further distally can stabilize the orthotic and preventing transverse plane motion in the shoe.
Term
What is the most important feature on the positive cast?
Definition
Bisection of the heel (only feature the lab has to go on)
Term
What are the 3 options for pouring a cast?
Definition
"Neutral, Inverted, or Everted"
Term
What is Separation Media?
Definition
Soap and water
Term
What things can we do with a positive cast after it has been made?
Definition
Add a FF Platform for intrinsic posting. We can also add medial or lateral arch plaster fill to accommodate FF Platform. Accommodations for PF or a plantar-flexed 2nd met.
Term
What is Lateral Expansion?
Definition
Done routinely by lay unless said otherwise. 1/8” of plaster added to accommodate the fact that when we stand on our feet the fat pad of the calcaneus displaces laterally. Adding this will make the heel cup fit the foot better.
Term
What is the fx of the Vacuum Press?
Definition
To press the material onto the positive cast. The easiest way to accomplish this.
