Morphine

 

Definition

Classification: Narcotic (opioid)

Action: Analgesia and sedation through binding to opiate receptors.

Indications: moderate to severe pain

Contraindications: hypotension, hypersensitivity to drug

Dose: 2-10mg

Route: IV, IO, IM, SQ, PO

Adverse Effects: hypotension, bradycardia, vomitting, syncope, apnea, resp. depression, nausea, tachycardia.

Other: use appropriate monitor. Naloxone is antagonist.

Tylenol (Acetaminophen)
Definition

Classification: Non-narcotic analgesic, antipyretic

Action: exact mechanism unknown, thought to inhibit cyclooxgenase

Indications: mild-moderate pain, fever.

Contraindications: hypersensitivity, alcoholism, chronic liver disease.

Dose: 325-650mg

Route: PO, Rectally

Adverse Effects: Rare.

Ibuprofen
Definition

Classification: NSAID

Action: anti-inflammatory and antipyretic through inhibition of prostaglandins.

Indications: Mild-moderate pain, fever, inflammation.

Contraindications: Hypersensitivity, bronchospam, angioedema.

Dose: 200-800mg.

Route: PO

Adverse Effects: Nausea, GI Bleed, Vomitting, Allergic Reaction.

Narcan (naloxone)
Definition

Classification: Opiod Antagonist

Action: Opioid antagonist w/o opiate agonist properties. Has no activity when given in absence of opiates.

Indications: Partial reversal of opiate drug effects. Opiate overdose.

Contraindications: hypersensitivity.

Dose: 0.4-2.0mg

Route: IV, IO, IM, SQ, IN, Neb.

Adverse Effects: Fever, chills, vomitting, diarrhea, nausea, opiate withdrawal.

Other: Administer enough to reverse resp depression and avoid full narcotic withdrawal syndrome.

Nalmefene(Revex)
Definition

Classification: Opiate Antagonist

Action: Opiod Antagonist w/o agonist properties, has no activity when given in absence of opiates.

Indications: Partial reversal of opiate drug effects, opiate overdose.

Contraindications: Hypersensitivity.

Dose: 0.5-1.0mg.

Route: IV, IM, SQ, IO.

Adverse Effects: Fever, Chills, Vomitting, Diarrhea, Nausea, Opiate Withdrawal.

Other: Duration much longer than naloxone.

Definition

Classification: NSAID

Action: Anti-inflammatory and antipyretic through inhibition of prostaglandins.

Indications: Mild-moderate pain, fever, renal colic, inflammation.

Contraindications: Hypersensitivity, broncospams, angioedema.

Dose: 30mg (IV and Elderly) 60mg IM

Route: IV, IM

Adverse Effects: Nausea, GI Bleeding, Vomitting, Allergic Reaction, Dizziness, Headache.

Versed (Midazolam)
Definition

Classification: Benzodiazepine

Action: Binds to Type A GABA Receptors causing sedation

Indications: Anxiety, Sedation, Seizures

Contraindications: Hypersensitivity

Dose: 1-5mg.

Route: IV, IM, IO

Adverse Effects: Hypotension, sedation, amnesia, resp depression, nausea, vomitting.

Other: Flumazenil is an antagonist.

Definition

Classification: Dissociative Anesthetic

Action: Causes dissociation between the cortical and limbic

Indications: Sedation, analgesia.

Contraindication: Hypersensitivity, hypertension.

Dose: 0.5-1.0mg/kg (IV), 2-4mg/kg (IM)

Route: IV, IM

Adverse Effects: Hallucinations

Other: All monitors should be in place. Resuscitative equipment should be immediately available.

Definition

Classification: Anti-inflammatory and antipyretic through inhibition of thromboxane Az

Indications: mild-moderate pain, fever, platelet aggregation inhibitor.

Contraindications: hypersensitivity, bronchospams, angioedema, MAOIs(monoamine oxidase inhibitors)

Dose: 350-650mg

Route: PO

Adverse Effects: N/V. GI Bleed, Allergic Reaction. Avoid EC Aspirin in CP.
