Term
ultimate purpose of a wheelchair?
Definition
improve function
Term
alignment + support = ???
Definition
Mobility
Term
2 main components of a wheelchair?
Definition
seating system and frame (mobility system)
Term
are standard wheelchairs meant for neuro patients?
Definition
no, they are for temporary use
Term
Caster wheels?
Definition
are the small wheels in front
Term
what is needed for the use of a manual wheelchair?
Definition
Rom (not full Rom)
strength in UE
endurance
Term
scooter are used when?
Definition
there is only and endurance problem and positioning is not a priority
Term
tilt in space or reclining chair gives pressure relief?
Definition
tilt in space give pressure relief.

reclining chair redistributes pressure
Term
amputee wheel chairs?
Definition
have an off set axle to redistribute weight.
Term
joystick, sip-n-puff, latched micro switch control system.... differences?
Definition
joystick- need full hand function

sip n puff: breathing control needed

latched micro switch: 4 separate switches for 4 different directions on different parts of the body.
Term
what must a patient possess for a powered wheelchair?
Definition
cognitive function
Term
when placing extra stuff on a wheel chair u must prove?
Definition
prove that the pt needs it, and document why.
Term
pts goals
pts functional ability
pts age and size
pts use?
temporary vs permanent
mental and physical capacity
Definition
all things to think about when considering a wheel chair.
Term
for posture examination with wheelchairs. what is the key?
Definition
the Pelvis is the key.

it controls everything
Term
used to break up extension tone with wheelchairs?
Definition
anterior build up on edge of seat to place in flexion at the hip...

AKA antithrust cushion
Term
use a head rest on a wheelchair if?
Definition
if poor head control
Term
______ position is used when taking measurements to a wheelchair?
Definition
hard surface in supine and a 90/90
Term
add X to leg length for footplate clearance of the floor?
Definition
2 inches
Term
X fingers between the popliteal fossa and the start of the seat?
Definition
3
Term
seat width is X wider than the pts hips?
Definition
hand between each hip and armrest
Term
X fingers vertical from axillary to top of back rest?
Definition
4
Term
arm rest height should be where?
Definition
to get elbows at 90 degrees
Term
same the seating systems?
Definition
sling
linear / planar
generic (foam, gel, air)
custom molded contour
Term
sling seat?
Definition
the type in a standard wheelchair. no support
Term
linear / planar seat?
Definition
solid seat, harder surface
Term
differences between
foam, gel, and air (roho) seats?
Definition
foam give most support, least pressure releif.

gel give middle of support and pressure relief

air- give most pressure relief, but least support
Term
J cousin seats?
Definition
get in sacral for pressure relief.
with foam to support the femurs
Term
Z breaks vs regular breaks?
Definition
Z breaks are under the seat and out of the way.
Term
if pressure is a problem. what is performed in wheel chair exams?
Definition
pressure mapping
Term
acute poliomyelitis comes in X forms? what are they?
Definition
2

non-paralytic poliomyelitis:::: virus in bloodstream, flue like

paralytic poliomyelitis::: virus crosses the blood-brain barrier. destruction of motor nerve cells (anterior horn cells). with atrophy of dennervated muscle fibers.
Term
symptoms of acute poliomyelitis?
Definition
2 weeks of fever, headache, sore throat, muscle pain and muscle paresis or paralysis
Term
outcomes of acute poliomyelitis?
Definition
motor neuron and muscle fibers innervated ether are unaffected or recover. or are totally destroyed.

resulting in partially dennervated muscle
Term
recovering from poliomyelitis?
Definition
50% of strength with in 3m, 75% in 6Months...

the recovery can be compromised with over taxing the patient

1. terminal axon sprouting (giant motor unit). 2. muscle fibers hypertrophied by intensive exercise and activity - dennervation hypertrphy.3. motor learning (compensation: overuse/substitution)
4. increased recruitment of the giant motor unit
Term
does everyone with acute polio get postpolio syndrome?
Definition
NO, but you do have to get acute polio go get post polio
Term
etiology of post polio?
Definition
unknown, loss of neuron due to normal aging, premature aging?
Term
pathology of post polio?
Definition
increased metabolic demands (overuse) on the motor unit... pruning of the axon sprouts... decreased number of muscle fibers innervated... loss of motor units= muscle weakness

failure of transmission of the nerve impulse at the axon terminal (fatigue and decreased endurance
Term
diagnosis of post polio?
Definition
history of polio as child, with recovery . 15 years stability. then an onset of 2 or more new health problems (fatigue, weakness and or atrophy , muscle and joint pain, cold intolerance)

with no other medial condition to explain symptoms...
