Definition
Professional Liability, this type protects the designer in case some action by the designer causes bodily injury or property damage. Sometimes called malpractice or errors of omissions insurance, this coverage responds to problems resulting from things such as incorrect specifications, mistakes on drawings, and incorrect installation of furniture or fixtures.

Definition
includes as range of insurance to protect against claims of property damage, liability, and personal injury caused by the designer or employees, consultants, or other people hired by the designer. It may also include product liability insurance, which provides protection in case a product or installation completed by the designer or subcontractor does some injury to the client after the designer and subcontractor gives up possession of the product.

protects the designer's building and its contents against disasters such as fire, theft, and flood. Even if you rent space, property insurance protects the contents and any stock you may be holding for the client.

This insures against physical loss or damage caused by fire, theft, vandalism, and malicious mischief. The policy must be the "all risk" type rather tan the "specified peril" type.

Sole Proprietorship
Definition
simplest structure, the company is owned by an individual and operates either under the individual's name or a company name. It is only necessary to establish a name and location for business, open an company back account, and have stationary printed. Advantages: ease of setting it up, total management control, possible tax advantage. Disadvantages: owner is personally liable for all debts and losses of the company, more difficult to raise capital and establish credit as a sole proprietorship unless the owner's personal credit rating and assets are adequate.

Corporation
Definition
an association of individuals created by statutory requirements having an existence independent from its members. The formation and conduct of corporations are governed by the laws of individual states, and formal articles of incorporation must be drawn up by an attorney and filed with the appropriate state office to legally from a corporation. Advantage:is that a corporation is generally taxed at a lower rate than are individuals, which can result in considerable savings, and have a continuity independent of changes in stockholders, death of members of its board of directors, or changes in the principles, also relatively easy to raise capital by selling stock in the corporation. Disadvantes: corporation are the intitial cost and the continuing paperwork and formal requirements necessary to maintain the business, usually outweighed by the reduced liability and tax benefits.

Partnerships
Definition
third type of business organization open to interior designers. Two or more people share in the management, profits, and risks of the business. Income from the business is taxed as ordinary income on personal tax forms. Employees can be hired as with any form of business. Disadvantage: is that all the partners are responsible and liable for the actions of the others, personal assets of any of the partners are vulnerable to lawsuits and other claims, income is taxed at individual rates.

Definition
has one or more general partners and other limited partners. The general partners invest in the company, manage it, and are financially responsible, as with a general partnership. Limited partnership are, simply investors and recieve a portion of the company and are liable only to the extent of their investment.

design time, and construction and installation time. Interior Designer is responsible for developing the schedule for the design of the job and the production of contract documents. Construction Scheduling is the responsibility of the contractor. The designer must estimate the time required to complete the design and construction drawing production and apportion this work among the people assigned to the project.

Definition
bar chart used to schedule both design and constuction, and is the most common and easiest to use. The various activities are listed along the vertical axis, and a timeline is extended along the horizontal axis. Each activity is given a starting and finishing date, and overlaps are indicated by overlapping bars for each activity. Suitable for midsize projects.

Critical Path Method (CPM)
Definition
graphically depicts all the tasks required to complete a project, the sequence in which they must occur, their duration, the earliest or latest possible starting time, and the earliest or latest possible finishing time. Defines the sequence of tasks that are critical or that must be started and finished exactly on time it the total schedule is to be met. Each arrow represents an activity with a beginning and end point (represented by the numbered circles. No activity can begin until all activities leading into the circle have been completed.

form sent to the manufacture or vendor listing the items to be purchased, their exact catalog numbers, prices, shipping information and other data, also serves as an internal record for the design firm that can be used to keep track of what orders are outstanding. It is also used as a basis for billing the client if payment is made by the client to the interior design firm rather than directly to the manufacture.

this lists the contents of the shipment that the carrier (usually a trucker) carries with him or her. When the truck arrives at the final destination, the number of items should be checked against the bill of lading to make sure they match.
