Definition

Is the ratio of a measuring unit to the full-size item it represents.

Can also mean, a band of alternating light and dark portions, each of which represents a given length.

Term
Orthographic Drawings
Definition
Use orthographic projections to enable a three-dimensional object to be seen in two dimensions.
Term
Orthographic Projection
Definition

Is a view of an object seen as though the viewer's line of sight were simultaneously perpendicular to every point on the face of the object (Ex. floor plans, reflected ceiling plans, elevations and sections).

Also used as a basis for some three-dimensional drawings including axonometric drawings.

Term
Floor Plan
Definition

Orthographic view of an object as seen from directly above.

Floor plan is a section where a horizontal cut is made through the building at 5' AFF.

Term
Roof Plan
Definition
View of a building seen from above without the section cut.
Term

Site Plan

Section

Term
Axonometric Drawings
Definition

View of an objec inclined to the picture plane in such a way that the three principal axes are foreshortened.

Three types of axonometric drawings:

  1. Isometric
  2. Dimetric
  3. Trimetric
Term
Isometric Drawings
Definition
Three-dimensional view of an object where the object is tilted in relationship to the picture plane (rather than parallel in relationship to the picture plane, as with orthographic drawings).
Term
Oblique Drawings
Definition
Three-dimenshional view of an object where one plane of hte object is parallel to the picture plane while the third axis is obliqe to the picture plane.
Term
Perspective Drawings
Definition
Give the most accurate two-dimensional representation of the three-dimensional world.
