Term
 Data
Definition
Information from observations or experiments. Example: The number of buffalo in Yellowstone National Park, etc.
Term
 Controlled Experiment
Definition
An experiment where only one variable is changed.
Term
 Observation
Definition
Using your five senses to gather data. Example: Listening to the hoot of owls to determine which type of owl is there or counting the number of birds in your backyard.
Term
 Analyzing Data
Definition
Calculating data and looking for patterns or trends in order to reach a conclusion from an experiment.
Term
 Scientific Law
Definition
Something that scientists expect to happen every time under similar circumstances. Example: Gravity causes objects to fall to the ground every time.
Term
 Scientific Theory
Definition
An explanation for observations that seem to happen but we don't really know for sure. Example: Black Holes, Continental Drift. A scientific theory can change with new data.
Term
 Inference
Definition
An idea based upon an observation: Example: The sky is cloudy therefore I think it might rain since in the past, when it gets cloudy it usually rains.
Term
 Scientific Method
Definition
Six Steps to investigate and solve a problem: 1. Question or Problem 2. Observation/Research 3. Hypothesis 4.Experiment/Gather Data 5.Analyze Data/Draw Conclusions 6. Report Findings
Term
 Science
Definition
A system of acquiring knowledge. From the Latin term "scientia" meaning knowledge.
Term
 Manipulated/Independent Variable
Definition
A variable that is changed in an experiment to see what happens. Plotted on the X axis of a graph. "MIX"
Term
 Dependent/Responding Variable
Definition
The variable or thing that responds to the change (of the manipulated variable). Plotted on the Y axis. "DRY"
Term
 Hypothesis
Definition
An educated guess about the solution to a problem based upon observations and inferences. It is a "testable" statement that is always stated in an "If then" statement. Example: If we turn down the thermostat then the room will get cooler.
Term
 Conclusion
Definition
The answer that an experiment gives to the scientist. (The results of the experiment show that....)
Term
 Metric System
Definition
International System of Measurement Units. The system is organized around base units: 1.) meters/length 2.) Grams/mass 3.) Seconds/time 4.) Cubic Centimeters/volume.
Term
 Quantitative
Definition
A measureable value. The amount of something.
Term
 Qualitative
Definition
The characteristic of something; color, size, beauty, strength, etc.
