Term
Ligaments
Definition
ropelike bundles of collagen fibrils that connect bone to bone.
Term
Tendons
Definition
collagen fibers connecting muscle to bone
Term
Bursae
Definition
pouches of synovial fluid that cushion the movement of tendons and muscles over bone or other joint structures.
Term
Cartilage
Definition
collagen matrix overlying bony surfaces
Term
Articular structures:
Definition
include joint capsule and articular cartilage, synovium and synovial fluid, intra-articular ligaments, and juxta-articular bone
Term
Extra-articular structures:
Definition
include periarticular ligaments, tendons, bursae, muscle, fascia, bone, nerve and overlying skin
Term
Articular disease
Definition
typically involves swelling and tenderness of the entire joint and limits both active and passive ROM
Term
Extra-articular disease
Definition
typically involves selected regions of the joint and types of movement
Term
Synovial Joint
Definition
-joint is freely moveable
-bones are covered by articular cartilage
-bones are seperated by synovial cavity
-synovial membrane secretes synovial fluid that lubricates joint movement
Term
Examples of synovial joint
Definition
shoulder
knee
Term
Cartilaginous Joints
Definition
-joint is slightly moveable
-bones are seperated by fibrocartilaginous discs
-discs contain nucleus pulposus that cushions bony movement
Term
Example of cartilaginous joint
Definition
vertebral bodies of spine
Term
Fibrous joints
Definition
-joints have no appreciable movement
-bones separated by fibrous tissue or cartilage
Term
Example of fibrous joint
Definition
sutures of the skull
Term
spheroidal joint
Definition
convex surface in concave cavity
movement is wide-ranging flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, rotation, circumduction
Term
Example of shperoidal joint
Definition
shoulder
hip
Term
Hinge joint
Definition
articular shape is flat, planar
-motion in one plane; flexion, extension
Term
example of hinge joint
Definition
elbow
interphalangeal joints of hand and foot
Term
condylar
Definition
articular shape is convex or concave
movement of two articulating surfaces not dissociable
Term
Example of condylar joint
Definition
knee
temporomandibular joint
Term
ROM for Temporormandibular Joint
Definition
ROM: opening and closing
protrusion and retraction
lateral or side to side
Term
Anatomy of the shoulder
Definition
3 muscles: 3 muscles groups, 3 joints, bones
Term
ROM for Shoulder
Definition
flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, internal rotation, external rotation
Term
Anatomy of elbow
Definition
4 bones, 3 joints, 5 muscles
Term
ROM of elbow
Definition
flexion, extension, pronation, supination
Term
ROM of hand and wrist
Definition
flexion, extension, adduction (radaial deviation) abduction (ulnar deviation)
Term
ROM of fingers
Definition
flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, opposition (moving the thumb across the hand)
Term
Assessment for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Definition
1. Most sensitive: thumb abduction by asking the patient to raise the thumb straight up as you apply downward resistance
2. Tinel’s sign: tingling with tapping over the median nerve as it enters the carpal tunnel
3. Phalen’s sign: numbness or tingling with pressing backs of hands together in acute flexion for 60 seconds
Term
Tinel’s sign
Definition
Test for Carpal Tunnel
tingling with tapping over the median nerve as it enters the carpal tunnel
Term
Phalen’s sign
Definition
test for carpal tunnel: numbness or tingling with pressing backs of hands together in acute flexion for 60 seconds
Term
Spine
Definition
7 cervical, 12 thoracic, and 5 lumbar vertebrae are stacked on the sacrum and coccyx
Term
ROM of neck
Definition
Flexion and extension: chin to chest, look up at ceiling
Rotation and lateral bending: look over one shoulder and then the other; bring ear to shoulder
Term
ROM of spine
Definition
Flexion and extension: bend forward and try to touch toes; bend backward
Rotation and lateral bending: rotate trunk (pull shoulder and then the opposite hip posteriorly); bend to side from waist
Term
ROM of hip
Definition
flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, rotation
Term
Bulge sign
Definition
A fluid wave or bulge on the medial side between the patella and the femur is considered a positive bulge sign consistent with a minor effusion
Term
Balloon sign
Definition
When the knee joint contains a large effusion, suprapatellar compression ejects fluid into the spaces adjacent to the patella. A palpable fluid wave signifies a positive “balloon sign.” A returning fluid wave into the suprapatellar pouch confirms a major effusion.
Term
Ballotting the patella
Definition
To assess large effusions, you can also compress the suprapatellar pouch and “ballotte” or push the patella sharply against the femur. Watch for fluid returning to the suprapatellar pouch
Term
ROM of knee
Definition
flexion, extension, internal rotation, external rotation
Term
ROM ankle and foot
Definition
Ankle flexion (plantar flexion)
Point foot toward the floor
Ankle extension (dorsiflexion)
Point foot toward the ceiling
Inversion
Bend heel inward
Eversion
Bend heel outward
