Bone

Definition
A body tissue made up of both living cells and nonliving materials. It is an organ that makes up the skelton. There are 206 different bones, and together with tissues that bind and protect the bones form the skeletal system.

Joint

Definition
A place at which two bones meet. At some joints movement occurs and are held in place by ligaments.

Ligaments

Definition
Strong bands of fiber that allow movement between two bones while keeping them in place.

Cartilage

Definition
Protect bones at joints. Tissue much like bone but is softer and more flexible.  Provides padding and prevents damage when bones rub together.

A membrane that covers bone.

Definition
A layer of bone that gives bone its strength.

Spongy Bone

Definition
Softer bone that contains many hollow spaces that help  prevent bone breakage because they act like shock absorbers when a bone is hit.  Makes up most of the ends of long bones.

Bone Marrow

Definition
Inside of long bones where the body's blood cells are produced. Blood leaves the bones through the vessels that weave throughout the bone.  Bones must be supplied with blood or they will die.

Your skeleton gives you shape, supports your body, allows you to stand errect, and protects your organs.

Immovable Joints

Definition
Place where bones come together but there is no movement. Example of Immovable joint is the skull.

Definition
Joints that allow movement of bones, and are held together by ligaments.

Ball and Socket Joint

Definition
Allows for a lot of movement. Example: Hip, and shoulder.

Pivot Joint

Definition
Allows for movement in the neck., and forearm.

Gliding Joint

Definition
Allows a lot of range of motion, one bone glides over another. Example: Spine and Wrist and ankle.

Hinge Joint

Definition
Works like a door hinge,allows the arm and leg swing back and forth.  Example:Elbow and knee, fingers and toes too.
