Term
Which one of the following motions occurs in the saggital plane?
Definition
flexion
Term
How does the frontal plane divide the body?
Definition
into front and back halves
Term
How many degrees of freedom are in a condyloid (ex. radiocarpal joint) joint?
Definition
2
Term
Which one of the following joints has three (3) degrees of freedom?
Definition
glenohumeral joint
Term
A patient is standing and is performing squatting exercises. Which one of the following descriptions BEST describes activity?
Definition
a closed chain exercise
Term
Which one of the following statements is TRUE when describing a third class lever?
Definition
the resistance arm is longer than the force arm
Term
Which one of the following statements about bone growth is true?
Definition
The cells which cause bone growth are called osteoblasts.
Term
An end feel that is described as a hard limitation to movement with a slight give is descriptive of which one of the following types of end feels?
Definition
capsular
Term
Which one of the following terms BEST describes joint surfaces that are pushing in opposite directions?
Definition
sheering
Term
Which one of the following statements concerning muscle physiology is TRUE?
Definition
Troponin and tropomysosin prevent actin and myosin from combining.
Term
Which one of the following statements about the regulation of calcium in the body is TRUE?
Definition
Parathormone is released in response to low calcium levels in the blood.
Term
A muscle contraction that is ocurring while the muscle is gradually lengthening is called a(n) _______________ contraction.
Definition
eccentric
Term
Which one of the following statements describes the action that occurs during a concentric muscle contraction?
Definition
the muscle attachments are moving closer together.
Term
Which one of the following statements about the motor unit is TRUE?
Definition
a muscle fiber can either contract or remain at rest
Term
Which one of the following statements about muscle fiber types is TRUE?
Definition
slow twitch fibers have high endurance
Term
Active insufficiency of the wrist and finger flexors would be demonstrated in which one of the following cases?
Definition
wrist flexion with finger flexion
Term
List four (4) anatomical structures that are characteristically found in a synovial joint.
Definition
synovial lining
articular cartilage
joint capsule
ligament
Term
In consideration of the center of gravity of an object list three key components that would make an object be more stabile.
Definition
Low height - low center of gravity
wide base of support
center of gravity falls within the WIDE base of support
Term
Define arthrokinematics.
Definition
Arthrokinematics is looking at the relation between joint surface movements.
Term
Give an example of arthrokinematics.
Definition
here are three types of arthorkinematic motion: roll, glide, and spin. Roll occurs when new points on each surface come into contact throughout the motion (like a ball rolling along a floor). Glide is when one point on a joint surface contacts new points on the other surface and it is linear. Spin is when the same point on each surface remains in contact with each other and rotate on a fixed point (head on neck).
Term
Define osteokinematics.
Definition
The study of joint motion that bones move in space without regard to the movement of joint surfaces is osteokinematics.
Term
Give an example of osteokinematics.
Definition
An example of osteokinematics is shoulder flexion and shoulder extension.
Term
Describe the convex/concave rule and the relationship to joint movement
Definition
A concave joint surface will move on a fixed convex surface in the same direction the body segment is moving. Conversely, a convex joint surface will move ono a fixed concave surface in the opposite direction as moving body segment. The rule states that shape determines motion.
Term
List four functions of the skeletal system.
Definition
Provide a rigid framework for the body
Serves as levers for skeletal muscle
protects the vulnerable viscera including the brain, spinal cord, heart and lungs
manufactures red blood cells
Term
Slow twitch units are used ____ during muscle contractions.
Definition
first Fast twitch units are recruited only out of need and thus are less often used.
