What is informed consent, what is included in it, and why is it needed for research?
Definition
Informed consent is a voluntary agreement of all procedures of research and it is required in all studies and research using human participants. It includes the choice to decline participation at any time, consequences for declining or withdrawing from the intervention, it includes who is doing what, the location, when the research will take place, how the information will be used, the purpose of the study and any possible risks. It is needed to protect the privacy of students, teachers and parents.
Term
Why is client confidentiality important and how is the confidentiality agreement kept?
Definition
The confidentiality between a client and a researcher/practitioner is important to protect the privacy of participants. Confidentiality can be kept by using fictitious names and locations for the research, safely keeping and disposing client records, and by following the specific laws for disclosing information.
Term
Can deception occur while trying to receive informed consent? How can this happen and what can prevent it?
Definition
Yes, deception can occur by making exaggerated claims of the effectiveness of an intervention. We can prevent this by looking closely at the research of the intervention, choosing appropriate short and long term goals, and by having ongoing meetings with teachers and parents to discuss progress data.
Term
When is it necessary to obtain child assent for research?
Definition
Child assent should be obtained when the IRB decides that it is necessary to be required. Child assent can be waived if the child is unable to be consulted and if the intervention is prospectively beneficial for the well-being of the child and is only available through the context of research.
