Preparation:

"would endure fittings for gowns, gathering of the necessary accessories such as her slippers, her fan, feathers, jewelry, and more....but, equally as important, was her deportment training. This included learning to walk gracefully with seemliness in the presence of the Queen. She may spend hours practicing to glide across the room, using a tablecloth as a simulated train in order to get the feel for sweeping her dress appropriately as she walked, without getting tangled in yards of fabric. The young debutante would also practice kissing the Queen's hand, but the curtsy was all-important!"

Dress Rules:

"For presentations, one was required to wear a gown with a train, and a tulle headdress with a veil that was long enough to float over the train."

"during the reign of King George III and Queen Charlotte, the court dress style was hoop-skirted and elaborate, even though fashion styles at that time called for simple dresses with high waists. During the reign of King George IV, hoop skirts were expelled and court-dress style became a variation of whatever was popular for formal evening wear during the period. "

Married and Un-Married Women:

"For a young unmarried woman, white was the prefer-red color for her dress, though other soft colors were acceptable, over a white background. Married women to be presented were allowed more color, however, most chose soft shades and white. It was not un-common for women to have their wedding dress modified into a court dress."

Headdress:

"The headdress, while always including a veil, also required feathers as part of it, although, the number and size of the feathers varied with the Monarchy. At the time of Queen Charlotte, young ladies wore one single towering ostrich feather, but through the years, the number of feathers required increased."

"Queen Victoria hated small feathers, so orders were issued that Her Majesty wanted to see the feathers as the young lady approached. Later in Queen Victoria's reign, as well as in the court of Edward VII, the mandated headdress was three feathers arranged in a Prince of Wales plume--that is, the center feather was higher than the two on each side of it--and it was worn slightly on the left side of the head. Tiaras were worn by married women, and it was extremely difficult to keep the feathers in place, especially during the curtsy."

Ladies in Mourning:

"For young ladies and women to be presented who were in mourning, it was acceptable for their dresses and veils to be black. No matter how cold the weather was on this special day, absolutely no cloaks, shawls, capes, or wraps of any kind were permitted to be worn. Those items remained in the lady's carriage. "

Benefit:
"It took weeks of preparation for the event, but this short ceremony allowed the young lady full-membership into fashionable Society and the "Marriage Market", along with its collective privileges. She was now permitted to attend court functions, balls and parties of which she would have otherwise not been included. As well, she could now negotiate an acceptable marriage in high society. Formal presentation to the Queen was an honor bestowed exclusively upon young ladies at the highest level of society, but anyone who had been presented at Court was welcomed anywhere!"

Definition
" In the English court of St. James, the parents of young and affluent girls were looking to join the girls in marriage to men of comparable social standing and pedigree. During the court's season of April through July, many parties were held among the upper-class royals. The emerging, yet extremely wealthy, middle class soon sought sponsors to present their daughters to this group of entitled bachelors and their families. The first party of the season involved the presentation of these women to the Queen. The bow to the Queen is now referred to as the St. James bow, and is the highlight of the debutante balls of today. According to Wikipedia, Queen Elizabeth II abolished the formal presentation of debutantes to the court in 1958. "

Definition
"In England, the history of the debutante ball centers around ceremonies that involved the debutante having to wear certain clothing such as a feather head dress. Traditionally, English debutantes were introduced by former debutantes, often the mothers if they had had a coming out, or else a mother-in-law introducing her son's new wife. Quite often though, a debutante was a young woman ready to look for a husband. Queen Elizabeth II sanctioned court ceremonies for debutantes and began the English practice of more social introductions in the form of a debutante ball."

"Modern debutante balls require a minimum of 6 months of preparation and thousands of dollars in expenses. Debutantes and their escorts are required to learn formal dancing techniques and etiquette, and to don formal attire for their presentation to society.
American high-school proms were created by middle-class parents in the mid-to-late 1800s to mimic the grandeur and formal dress of upscale and royally pedigreed aristocrats and their daughters at debutante balls."

Definition

"

The “coming out” of a young woman represented a change in her status from child to adult and her “introduction” to society. This became formalized in English aristocratic society in the first half of the nineteenth century through the Victorian period. Up to the point of their coming of age of seventeen or eighteen, girls did not have much of a role, other than to attend to their schooling, as social functions and contacts were fairly limited. A young lady’s introduction to society not only marked her transition to adulthood, but also her availability for marriage. Marriages were no longer being arranged by this time, so the formalization of the event helped insure that she would meet young men who were deemed suitable by her parents."

"For those in “society” with contacts to the royal family, the actual coming out was the introduction of the debutante to the king or queen. This usually occurred in June when the debutante would go to the royal palace at an appointed time. This was a big event with the debutante dressed in a long gown with a trailing court train wearing a tiara headdress. "

"Indeed, she would practice getting in and out of a coach before the appointed day so that she could move gracefully when she arrived at the palace. The event itself was quite short, but was formal and conducted with a certain amount of “pomp and ceremony”. Once introduced, the debutante emerged as an adult and it marked the beginning of her first social season, although if she did not get married or engaged, the coming out was often repeated."

"Frequently, wedding dresses were made with two different bodices: one for the wedding; one for court. Court dresses were usually short-sleeved, and--unless a doctor's certificate could be presented stating that such a thing was injurious to the young woman's health--it was absolutely mandatory that a court dress be low-cut."
