Cards

Term
Antigenic Variation
Definition
periodic change in the antigen displayed by the pathogen to avoid immune response.
Term
Invasins
Definition
proteins used to induce phagocytosis of pathogens
Term
Siderophores
Definition
Fe acquiring proteins
Term
Adherence
Definition
attachment of pathogen to host by adhesins or ligands that bind to complementary surface receptors on host tissues
Term
Coagulases
Definition
bacterial enzymes that clot the fibrinogen in the blood
Term
Kinases
Definition
Bacterial enzymes that break down fibrin and digest clots formed by the body to isolate the infection.
Term
Hemolytic Patterns of Kinases (Alpha)
Definition
Partial pattern with green tint
Term
Hemolytic Patterns of Kinases (Beta)
Definition
Complete pattern with yellow tint
Term
Hemolytic Patterns of Kinases (Gamma)
Definition
No defined pattern with no tint
Term
Hyaluronidase
Definition
enzyme secreted by certain bacteria to hydrolyze hyaluronic acid to break apart the cells in particularly the connective tissue cells.
Term
Collagenase
Definition
An enzyme produced by many Clostridium species that break down the protein collagen.
Term
IgA Proteases
Definition
enzymes that destroy IgA antibodies
Term
Toxins
Definition
proteins that are poisonous substances produced by certain microorganisms
Term
Exotoxins
Definition
produced inside some bactera as part of their growth and metabolism and are secreted by the bacterium into the surrounding medium or release following lysis
Term
A-B toxins (exotoxin type)
Definition
the exotoxin consisting of an active enzyme component (A) and a binding component (B).
(i.e. Diphtheria)
Term
Membrane Disrupting Toxin
Definition
cause lysis of the host cells by disrupting their plasma membranes.
Term
Superantigens
Definition
antigens that provoke a very intense immune response by causing T cells to release cytokines that enter the bloodstram and give rise to many S/S (fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, shock and sometimes death) Examples: food poisoning staphylococcal toxins and TSS
Term
Endotoxins
Definition
part of the outer portion of the cell wall of gram-negative bacteria. The outer wasll consists of lipoproteins, phospholipids, and lipopolysaccharides (LPS). Lipid A is an LPS endotoxin.Endotoxins are activated when the Gram neg bacteria lyse. S/S include chills, fever, weakness, generalized aches, sometimes shock or death. Endotoxins may induce a miscarriage.
Term
Mircobial Mechanisms of Pathogenicity
Definition
1. Portal of Entry
2. Invasion of Microbes/Adherence
3.Penetration or Evasion of Host Defenses
4. Damage to Host Cells
5. Portal of Exit (usually same route as entry)
