Definition
this system covers the entire surface area of the body; includes the largest organ of the body: the skin and its accessory organs such as hair follicles, nails, sebaceous glands, sweat glands, and sensory receptors.

the inner, deep layer of skin composed of connective tissue. "Dermis" means skin.

The outer layer of skin, "epidermis" means on top of skin.

To protect against outside temperature changes, dehydration, and infectious microorganisms that can cause disease. Also, sweat glands, blood vessels and a layer of fat help the skin to regulate internal body temp. Receptors in skin help detect changes in the environment giving skin the function of sensation.

A loss or lack of scalp hair. May be a sign of an infection of the scalp, high fevers, drug reactions, or emotional stress.

an injury to the skin caused by excessive exposure to fire, electricity, chemicals, or sunlight. The level of injury caused by a burn is determined by the amount of surface area damaged (total body surface area or TBSA) and the depth of the damage. A burn is life-threatening when a large TBSA has become damaged, exposing the body to infection.
