Term
1) CARDIAC OUTPUT
Definition
amt. of blood pumped by each ventricle in one minute. OUTPUT = TIME
Term
2) STROKE VOLUME
Definition
amt. of blood ejected from ventricle with each heartbeat. VOLUME = AMT
Term
3) PRELOAD
Definition
vol. of blood left in the ventricle at the end of diastole.
a. Starling’s law – the more that the myocardial fibers are stretched, the greater the force of contraction is.
Term
4) AFTERLOAD
Definition
Peripheral resistance against which the left ventricle must pump. This resistance is increased when blood pressure is increased.
Term
5) BLOOD VESSELS
Definition
a. Arteries – thick walls, elastin, some smooth muscle. *Endothelium (inside lining) of arteries maintains hemostasis. Inhibits clotting of blood-keeps blood moving.
b. Arterioles – little elastin, more smooth muscle. *Major control of BP*
c. Capillaries – very thin, no elastin, no smooth muscle.
d. Venules – small amount of muscle & connective tissue.
e. Veins – larger veins have valves to prevent the back-flow of blood.
