Term
Describe what one scientist tried to do to localize memory only to show that memory is impossible to localize
Definition
One scientist tried to localize where memory was stored by burning out different areas of rats’ brains. They could still remember how to do a maze after each procedure, until their entire brains were gone and they died.
Term
Synaptic plasticity
Definition
• cells change over time to make communication more efficiently
• if a synapse isn’t used a lot, it will retract itself
• i.e. the more cell A communicates with cell B, the better cell A and B will be at communicating
Term
State Dependent Learning
Definition
• memory is associated with all sensory information
• hippocampus links ALL sensory input into a single memory (“cell assembly”)
Term
Long Term Potentiation
Definition
• model for learning in cells
• Model for sensitization (most primitive type of learning)
• Stimulation of the cell the first time produces little response but the second stimulation produces a response more easily
• This is called cellular memory which lasts for days which is called long term potentiation
