Definition
In exponential form, the exponent is the small, raised number used to show repeated multiplication -- the number of times you multiply the base
Term
Base
Definition
In exponential form, the base is the number on the bottom -- the number being multiplied.
Term
Exponential expression
Definition
An exponential expression is an expression that involves an exponent. The expression may contain variables, which may be the base or the exponent.
Term
Principal square root
Definition
For any nonnegative number b, the number is called the principal square root of b. It has the property ()2 = b.

The principal square root of b is also denoted . The symbol representing the principal square root is called a radical sign, and the expression under it, in this case b, is called the radicand.

For example, the principal square root of 4 is 2, and the principal square root of 81
Term
Radicand
Definition
A radicand is the expression under a radical sign
Term
Scientific notation
Definition
A number written in scientific notation has the form N times 10 to the m power, where N is between 1 and 10, and m is an integer. When converting very large numbers to scientific notation, the decimal point is moved to the left and the exponent m is positive. When converting very small numbers, the decimal point is moved to the right and the exponent m is negative. Scientific notation provides a good way of writing and working with very large or very small numbers.
