dividend ÷ divisor = quotient

Example: in 12 ÷ 3 = 4, 4 is the quotient

Definition
What you get when a number is used in a multiplication three times.

Example: 4 x 4 x 4 = 64, so 64 is a cubed number

Variable
Definition
A symbol for a number we don't know yet. It is usually a letter like x or y.

Example: in x + 2 = 6, x is the variable

If it is not a variable it is called a Constant

Definition
The exponent of a number shows you how many times the number is to be used in a multiplication.

It is written as a small number to the right and above the base number.

In this example: 82 = 8 × 8 = 64

Numbers, symbols and operators (such as + and ×) grouped together that show the value of something.

Example 2×3 is an expression

The result of subtracting one number from another. How much one number differs from another.

Example: The difference between 8 and 3 is 5.

The number you get when you multiply an integer by itself.

Example: 4 × 4 = 16, so 16 is a square number.

0 (=0×0)
1 (=1×1)
4 (=2×2)
9 (=3×3)

The result of adding two or more numbers.

Example: 9 is the sum of 2, 4 and 3
(because 2 + 4 + 3 = 9).

A mathmatical phrase or sentence translated into spoken or written words.

 

 

Mathematical Sentence:
x + 13 = 20

Matching Verbal Expression:
"A number increased by thirteen is twenty."

The answer when two or more numbers are multiplied together.

A number with no fractional part.

Includes the counting numbers {1, 2, 3, ...}, zero {0}, and the negative of the counting numbers {-1, -2, -3, ...}

You can write them down like this: {..., -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, ...}

Examples of integers: -16, -3, 0, 1, 198

The numbers {0, 1, 2, 3, ...} etc.

There is no fractional or decimal part. And no negatives.

Example: 5, 49 and 980 are all whole numbers.

Definition

An algebraic expression is a mathematical phrase that can contain ordinary numbers, variables (like x or y) and operators (like add,subtract,multiply, and divide).
