Term
Cartographic Representation
Definition
Cartographic representations allow you to store and render additional information with the geographic features on a map.

With representations, you can produce
1.Multiple map products from a single master database
2.Scale-based map products
3.Map series products
Term
Geographic Representation
Definition
Used to understand spatial distributions and processes
Term
Map Elements: Title
Definition
describe what the map is depicting.
Term
Map Elements: legend
Definition
Since a map is a reduced representation of the real world, map symbols are used to represent real objects.
Both shapes and colors can be used for symbols on maps
Term
Map Elements: Scale
Definition
The smaller the number on the bottom of the map scale, the more detailed the map will be. A 1:10,000 map will show objects ten times as large as a 1:100,000 map but will only show 1/10th the land area on the same sized piece of paper.
Term
Earth Shape Principles: Oblate Spheroid
Definition
a rotationally symmetric ellipsoid having a polar axis shorter than the diameter of the equatorial circle whose plane bisects it. (same as ellipsoid)
Term
Geoid
Definition
Equigravitational Surface, MEAN SEA LEVEL. Used as the reference for elevations.
Term
Geodesy
Definition
the scientific discipline that deals with the measurement and representation of the Earth, including its gravitational field, in a three-dimensional time-varying space. Geodesists also study geodynamical phenomena such as crustal motion, tides, and polar motion. For this they design global and national control networks, using space and terrestrial techniques while relying on datums( and coordinate systems.
a set of reference points on the Earth's surface against which position measurements are made, and (often) an associated model of the shape of the earth
