Management (Mullins)

The process through which efforts of members of the organisation are co-ordinated, directed and guided towards the achievement of organisational goals

A hunge bunch of gorgeously scented pink roses (process) splits in two to reveal a toy fort filled with many legged (members) spiders (organisms . organisation). My manager takes a big red mullet (Mullins) fish and unfolds it like a map reading off the co-ordinates. He puts on his white gloves and directs tour guide Barbie towards a red indian chief kicking an imperial mint football (achievement) in front of the spiders (organisation) who kick the mint into the football net and everyone jumps up and shouts Goal!

A relationship through which one person influences the behaviour or actions of other people

The CEO (leader) dangles a wedding ring (relationship) on the end of a long red mullet (mullins) fish. He swings it like a hypnotist in front of a crowd of people who are crammed into a beehive and the clapperboard man shouts Action!

Management v Leadership
Definition
My Manager is pulling a wishbone (V) with my CEO (Leader) with great effort. They are both wearing party hats and are standing in front of a wall made of brightly coloured red lego. I can hear jingle bells playing and smell the roast turkey.

The anchorman (Trevor MacDonald) is sitting on top of the wall's bright orange Coping stones holding up a whizzing wheeled Exercise bike being ridden by bugs bunny peddling furiously with sweat pouring off him. I can smell the sweat and hear the whizz of the wheels. I can feel the softness of the fur compared to the roughness of the bricks.

Bugs Bunny's enormous ears are meeting at the top forming the triangle shaped tent of the Mount Everest Base camp. The wind is howling and there is a crisp cold new snow smell in the air. My skin tingles with the cold.

A smelly dromedary with bad breath pokes his head out of the tent and Aims a rifle up at a boxing ring on top of the tent where a couple of elephants with boxing gloves on are pounding each other in a boxing (A)bout. The rifle fires a big splodge of yellow paint all over the ring. I can hear the rifle shot and smell the cordite while the jingle bell sound becomes the ding ding of the end of the boxing bout.

Management is about coping ...
Definition
with complexity: applying structure, control > order, continuity

A boat (about) floats by and in it my manager is sitting on the orange coping stone as if in a psychiatrist's chair complaining I have a complex. The psychiatrist passes him an application form and a structure chart. Zooming into the structure chart I can see the audit manager asking what the controls are as he orders a hamburger from the business continuity manager
Term

My manager rides his exercise bike over mounds of perfumed pink roses (process). He's watching a big screen where a projector is showing 3 bottles of sauce (ketchup, daddy sauce and tartar souce) (resources) pouring onto a big clock (time) covered in spiders (organisation)

Leadership is about coping ...
Definition
with change: creating direction, vision, energy/inspiration

The CEO (leader) is sitting on the orange coping stone in a boat (about). Coins (change) are falling about his ears and grow so deep they are in danger of sinking the boat. He puts out his finger like in Michelangelo's creation of man and a spark shoots out of his finger (creation) and produces a compass (direction) out of thin air. With his other hand he holds binoculars to his eyes (vision). The binocular is made out of 2 batteries (energy) and a lightbulb pings over his head (inspiration)
Term
Leadership can only be exercised ...

over people (ie mainly interpersonal)

The CEO (leader) rides his exercise bike being supported by a bunch of people holding the bike high over their heads (over people). 2 clones of the personnel director stand at either end of the bike holding it steady(interpersonal)

Leadership is based ...

Definition
on the perception and choice of others (>followers)

The CEO (leader) is in the base camp tent. A row of ducklings stand behind him (followers). Their eyes and ears are huge as they perceive everything about him. They mark x on their ballot papers by his name with their webbed feet and choose him as leader.
Term

to secure willingness / commitment for extra performance, flexibility, loyalty etc

The CEO (leader) aims his rifle at security guard William Shakespeare (Willingness) who is wearing a strait jacket (committed. commitment) drinking a can of 4x lager through a straw made of a rolled up personal performance plan while flexibly doing backflips over the queen (royalty. loyalty)

finding direction in the face of critical challenges

The ceo (leader) in a boat (about) shouts Eureka! as he picks up a compass (finds direction) off the face of a big clock. Riding on the hands of the clock is Jeremy Paxman with a critter (critical) on his shoulder as he offers a starter for 10 (challenges)

Successful managers and leaders (Whetten & Cameron)
Definition
Managers cannot be successful without good leaders, and leaders cannot be successful without being good managers (Whetton & Cameron)

A weighing scale marked success has good managers on one side and good leaders on the other. The whole scene is being rained on (wet on/whetton) and a lightning flash turns out to actually be a photo flash from a camera(cameron)
Term
Leaders are in demand because they ...
Definition
1) energise and support change
2) secure commitment and input from employees (>> innovation, improved service)
3) set direction (>> co-ordinated team-working and guided empowerment)
4) develop people (>> maximised contribution)
5) facilitate and empower (>> flexibility, innovation, employee satisfaction/loyalty)

A bunch of CEO clones (leaders) and the characters below are marching round a brazier with banners waving up and down listing their demands. They are shouting What do we want? When do we want it? Now!
I can smell the word burning and see the flames flicker and hear the crackle of the wood.

1) Anchorman is dressed as a big energiser battery holding a big banner saying "support change!" He has big piles of coins on his shoulders and head.
2) Bugs bunny has a big bunch of keys (secure) and is locking up employees in strait jackets (committing them) putting (input) them in a basin (innovation) forcing them down with a sink plunger to the sound of a  looney tunes jingle (what's up folks?) for a TV advert which asks us to try the new improved service.
3) A man with a big red triangle on his jumper has a bullhorn and is shouting 'stage left!' and other set directions to a football team in matching twin sets and pearls (co-ordinated) who are loudly singing 'I've been working on the rail road all the live long day!' Tour guide Barbie is cheerleading. She wears an M on her sweater and waves battery powered pom poms and hula hoops with a polo mint (guided empowerment)
4) A dromedary takes a polaroid of the whole scene and I can see the photo developing people. He shouts that he will sell the picture for a maximum contribution

5) From a string of 8 elephants the facilites manager (facilitate) asks cheer leader Barbie (M Power) 'How do you feel about that?' She flexibly backflips into the basin (innovation) to the great satisfaction of the employees who let out a huge roar of approval and put a crown on her head- 'yeah, Queen Barbie!' expressing their loyalty for royalty

Hard management                     Soft leadership
Strategy                                    Skills
Structure                                   Staff
Systems                                    Style (culture)
                                                Shared goals

My manager uses a hard geology hammer to chip at strata in the desert. He's wearing a big gold medallion like Ali G and it glints in the sunlight. the sound of the hammer echoes back of the rocks. The ground smells hot and dusty. I feel thirsty and the sun is giving me a headache. He carefully points out the structure of the minerals he is excavating and explains how the eco system is reflected in the fossils in the seam.

Meanwhile the CEO picks up a huge soft marshmallow and (s)kills a bug that is crawling along his walking stick (staff). He picks up the staff and uses it as a microphone and joins Boy George and culture club to sing karma chameleon while kicking footballs in the air to the rhythm of the music. I like his style! The CEO, boy george, culture club and the chameleon then shoot their footballs into a shared goal net. The crowd roar and cheer.
