Term
LIS
Definition

One of the most underutilized features in Lync is the Location Information Server (LIS) database.  This is due usually to the following:

LIS is marketed in the same discussion as E911, which only North America (really US and Canada) can use

The configuration is completely performed in powershell

The LIS can also be very helpful for an organization (no matter what country you are in) for publishing…well, location information.  If a company is very spread-out, either regionally with many campuses or globally with many offices, wouldn’t it be great to auto-populate a user’s location information based on where they are actually sitting that day?  I mean Lync unleashes us from our cubicle and now it is hard to know if someone is actually in the office or working from another company location.

Term
LLDP
Definition

The Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP) is a vendor-neutral link layer protocol in the Internet Protocol Suite used by network devices for advertising their identity, capabilities, and neighbors on an IEEE 802 local area network, principally wired Ethernet.[1] The protocol is formally referred to by the IEEE as Station and Media Access Control Connectivity Discovery specified in standards document IEEE 802.1AB.[2]

LLDP performs functions similar to several proprietary protocols, such as the Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP), Extreme Discovery Protocol, Nortel Discovery Protocol (also known as SONMP), and Microsoft's Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD).

Term
DID
Definition
So DID ("direct inward dialing") was invented as a way to re-use a limited number of physical phone lines to handle calls to different published numbers. In a business with DID, the phone company uses DID signalling to identify the number they are about to connect to the business's PBX. Historically, this was done by pulsing the last 3 or 4 digits of the number being dialed before connecting the number. The PBX would use these DID digits to switch the call to the right recipient.
Term
SIP
Definition

Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), an application-layer control (signaling) protocol for creating, modifying, and terminating sessions with one or more participants. These sessions include Internet telephone calls, multimedia distribution, and multimedia conferences.

SIP invitations used to create sessions carry session descriptions that allow participants to agree on a set of compatible media types. SIP makes use of elements called proxy servers to help route requests to the user's current location, authenticate and authorize users for services, implement provider call-routing policies, and provide features to users. SIP also provides a registration function that allows users to upload their current locations for use by proxy servers. SIP runs on top of several different transport protocols.

Term
What is STUN?
Definition
Session Transversal Utility for NAT -This protocol basically allows an ICE client which is located behind a firewall providing Network Address Translation to discover the public IP address as well as identify the type of NAT in use and then provide that IP to the other party as a potential candidate to send media to. This IP would be assigned to the Internet-facing side of the NAT device which the client is located behind.
Term
What is TURN?
Definition
Transversal Using Relays around NAT - This protocol allows a dedicated ICE server to provide its own public IP address as a media candidate to one or both parties in a call and will act is a relay or proxy for the media session. This IP would always be the Internet-facing public IP address (either assigned directly to the server interface or assigned to an external NAT-device).
Term
What is ICE?
Definition
Internet Connectivity Establishment -The Interactive Connectivity Establishment draft provides a framework to unify the various NAT traversal techniques. This enables SIP-based VoIP clients to successful traverse the variety of firewalls that may exist between a remote user and a network.
