Social contract takes away some rights but insures protection of others.

You are an individual but when you enter society you give up rights in order to protect yourself.

Once consent is given... power shifts to government.  

Three Deficiencies in State of Nature

·      No established law written down

·      There are no indifferent judges in a state of nature

·      If someone crosses you… you don’t have the power to punish them

·      Freedom = protection of property

Fiduciary Power

·      Power based on trust

o   a person consents to obey government and considers government to be legit whenever he inherits property.

o   if you obey to a law at any point in your life you have  signed the consent of society

o   also whenever you use a government provided thing

Conclusion

·      Weird but was first thinker to make freedom his central theme

o   Freedom is important and precious not because it makes the nation great but for itself. Freedom is freedom and is something that all people in the state of nature have.
