Demeter was so saddened that she went into mourning and nothing grew. Zeus told Hades to return Persephone, but only if she hadn't eaten anything. Persephone had eaten 6 pomegranate seeds, so she came up 6 months of the year, and went back down the other 6. This accounts for seasons.
