Primary source: an original study or work

Original scholarly research or data; creative work; historical artifact or document;

 

Secondary source: interprets, quotes, mentions, reflects on,incorporates, or analyzes a Primary source.

 

I.E. A newspaper article (secondary source), quotes a journal  article (primary source): “According to recent research published in JAMA, the Journal of the American Medical Association …”

A general encyclopedia contains information on all branches of knowledge.  Articles are arranged alphabetically, often by subject. The entries are typically short and provide an overview on the topic. They provide a good basis for the beginning stages of research.  IE Encyclopedia Britannica, The World Book Encyclopedia

 

subject specific encyclopedia is more focused and covers a particular area of information. The entries are typically longer in length and go into much more detail
     Examples include: The Encyclopedia of Body Adornment or The Encyclopedia of Religion

Use search limiters IE searching only in abstracts or titles. publications within a time frame. Full-text. Search with quotations. Using databases instead of search engines.

 

Add synonyms for search words using “OR”
Example: (sensitivity OR allergy OR reaction). Use truncation (wild card characters) in search
    * for one or more letters at end of word.. Example: product* finds product and products and production and productivity. # and ? within words (see Help). Switch databases (from specialized to general)
