Term
nutrients
Definition
chemical substances in foods that are used by the body for growth and health.
Term
food security
Definition
access at all times to a sufficient supply of safe, nutritious foods.
Term
food insecurity
Definition
limited or uncertain availability of safe, nutritious foods.
Term
calorie
Definition
a unit of measure of the amount of energy supplied by food. Also known as the kilo calorie or the large calorie.
Term
what percentage of U.S. households are food insecure?
Definition
~12%
Term
true or false: a calorie is a nutrient.
Definition
false, a calorie is a unit of measure and therefore not a nutrient. sugars, proteins and lipids are nutrients.
Term
true or false: every part of our body was once a nutrient consumed through food.
Definition
true. nutrients are used to support growth, tissue maintenance and repair and ongoing health.
Term
essential nutrients
Definition
nutrients the body cannot manufacture, or generally produce in sufficient amounts. "essential" meaning required by the diet.
Term
what are the essential nutrients?
Definition
carbs, amino acids (PVT TIM HALL), linoleic and alpha linolenic acids (fatty acids), vitamins, water
Term
nonessential nutrients
Definition
are present in food and used in the body, but they do not have to be part of our diets.
Term
amount of nutrients needed in the diet vary based on:
Definition
age, body size, gender, genetic traits, growth, illness, lifestyle habits (smoking, alcohol intake), medication use, pregnancy and lactation.
Term
Dietary Reference Intake (DRI)
Definition
this is the general term used for the new nutrient intake standards for healthy people.
Term
Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs)
Definition
these are levels of essential nutrient intake judged to be adequate to meet the known nutrient needs of practically all healthy persons while decreasing the risk of certain chronic diseases.
Term
Adequate Intakes (AIs)
Definition
These are tentative RDAs. AIs are based on less conclusive scientific information than are the RDAs.
Term
Estimated Average Requirements (EARs)
Definition
These nutrient intake values that are estimated to meet the requirements of half the healthy individuals in a group. The EARs are used to assess adequacy of intakes of population groups.
Term
Tolerable Upper Intake Levels (ULs)
Definition
These are upper limits of nutrient intake compatible with health. The ULs do not reflect desired levels of intake. Rather, they represent total, daily levels of nutrient intake from food, fortified foods and supplements that should not be exceeded.
