Cards

Term
Biologist
Definition
A person who studies life science.
Term
Experimental Group
Definition
An experimental group is exposed to the same conditions in an experiment as the control group and is also exposed to additional variable to test the effect of the variable on the hypothesis statement.
Term
Variable
Definition
The factor which is changed and to which the experimental group is exposed to in a controlled experiment.
Term
Scientific Method Process
Definition
The processes by which scientists ask and then go about answering questions.
Term
Multicellular Organism
Definition
Organisms that are made up of two or more cells.
Term
Organism
Definition
Anything that is alive.
Term
Receptors
Definition
Specialized structures that allow an organism to sense and respond to its environment.
Term
Cellular Respiration
Definition
A group of chemical reactions that cells use to convert the energy contained in the food they make or eat into energy the organism can use.
Term
Photosynthesis
Definition
The process through which plants capture the sun's energy and then convert it into energy the plant can use.
Term
Homeostasis
Definition
Maintenance of a stable internal environment.
Term
Binomial Name
Definition

The two part name organisms receive as they are classified into more and more specific groups in the seven-level classification system; consists of the genus and species name.

Term
Molecule
Definition
Groups of atoms bonded together.
Term
Organic Molecule
Definition
Molecules that contain carbon (and usually oxygen and hydrogen) and are normally made by living cells.
Term
Complex Carbohydrate
Definition

These are made up of many, sometimes thousands, of simple carbohydrate molecules linked together.  These are usually made to store excess simple carbohydrates.

Simple carbohydrate:  Made up of one, two, or three simple sugars linked together.

Term
Lipids
Definition

One of four classes of organic molecules.

Some lipids are used to store excess energy.  Others form the boundary of the cell.  They are also made from atoms of oxygen, carbon, and hydrogen.  These are structurally more complex than carbohydrates.

Term
Fats
Definition
Lipids that are solid (like lard) at room temperature.
Term

How are proteins made?

Definition

All proteins are built by linking together smaller units called amino acids.  They can be made up of more than ten thousand amino acids linked together.  They contain carbon, oxygen, hydrogen and can also include sulfur and nitrogen.

Term
5 ways data can be obtained for an experiment
Definition

Data can be obtained thru the 5 senses which are:

smell, taste, touch, sight, and hearing.

Term
Why is DNA called the "blueprint of life"?
Definition
It is called the blueprint of life becasue DNA contains the information that determines everything about an organism.
Term
Four types of organic molecules
Definition
The four classes are:  carbohydrates, lipids, protens and nucleic acids.
Term
Carbohydrate molecules are composed of ______________.
Definition
carbon, oxygen and hydrogen atoms.
Term
Difference between matter, mass and weight
Definition

Matter:  Anything that takes up space and has mass.

Mass:  The amount of matter that something has.

Weight:  This is determined by the pull of gravity.

Term
What is air mainly made up of?
Definition
Air is made up of four different gases - nitrogen, oxygen, argon and carbon dioxide.
Term
Measured vs Derived Unit
Definition

Measured:  These calculate length and mass.

Derived:  Units such as those for surface area, temperature, volume and velocity are called derived units and are the result of mathematical relationships between two base units, or other derived units.

Term
Sexual vs. Asexual Reproduction
Definition

Sexual reproduction - requires a male and a female organism to mate, or to combine their genetic materials.  DNA from the male and female form a new cell.

Asexual reproduction - the formation of a new cell or organism without the exchange of genetic material.  It is accompllished by a singel cell splitting into one or more cells exactly like it.

Term
Aerobic and Anaerobic organism
Definition

Aerobic organism - Organisms that need oxygen to survive.

Anaerobic organism - Die in the presence of oxygen.  This group of organism is typically a type of bacteria.
