Term
Mutualism
Definition
When there is a close relationship between 2 organisms and both benefit from the relationship. Hippos and Oxpeckers, Cow Birds and Cows, Humans and E-Coli Bacteria, Coral and Algae
Term
Commensalism
Definition
When there is a close relationship between 2 organisms; 1 benefits but the other is neither helped nor harmed. This relationship is rare in nature. Oak Tree and Spanish Moss, Orchid and Banyan Tree
Term
Paratism
Definition
When there is a close relationship between two organisms where one benefits and the other is harmed. Fleas and Dogs, Tapeworms and Humans, Ticks and Deer, Leeches and Fish
Term
Limiting Factor
Definition
A factor in the environment that keeps an organisms population from increasing. amount of food, amount of water, temperature, amount of space
Term
Gymnosperm
Definition
A type of seed plant that produces naked seeds because they ar not protected by a fruit. Pine Trees, Cypress Trees, Cedar Trees, Sago Palm, Gingko Tree, Red Wood
Term
Angiosperm
Definition
A type of flowering plant. Once the flowers are polinated it produces seeds covered with a fruit. Azaleas, Lemons, Oak Trees, Tomatoes
Term
Monocot
Definition
Type of Angiosperm, 1 seed leaf, veins in the leaves are parallel to each other, vascular tissue is scattered, Flower parts in threes. Grass, Daisy, Sunflower, Corn
Term
Dicot
Definition
Type of Angiosperm, Two Seed Leaves, Veins in the leaves are branching, Vascular tissue is in a circular pattern, Flower Parts in 4's or 5's. Oak, Hicory, Sweetgum, Elm
Term
Species
Definition
A group of like organisms that can mate and produce fertile offspring. Oak, Bears, Raccoons, Humans
Term
Population
Definition
All the members of one species in a particular area. Deer in a forest area
Term
Community
Definition
All of the different population living together. All the deer, Black Bear, Raccoons, Opossum, Mountain Lions, in the South Alabama Forest
Term
Ecosystem
Definition
The community of organisms that live in a particular area along with the nonliving surroundings. All the deer, Black Bear, Raccoons, Opossum, Trees, Water, Air, Rocks, in the SA forest
Term
Predator
Definition
The organism that hunts, stalks, and kills the organism they are stalking. Wolf, Tiger, Lion, Bear
Term

Definition
The organism that is hunted, stalked, killed, and eaten by another organism. Rabbit, Deer, Rat, Mouse
Term
Genotype
Definition
An organisms genetic combination. Brown Eyed People have a genetic combination of BB or Bb and Blue Eyed People have a genetic comination of bb.
Term
Phenotype
Definition
An organisms physical appearance of their genetic combination.
Term
Mitosis
Definition
All reproduction in all regular body cell. The cell nucleus divides into two nuclei and DNA is copied. The cell divides in half creatiing two identicla cells with one nucleus and a complete copy of the cells DNA.
Term
Meiosis
Definition
Sex cell reproduction that occurs in the reproductive only ovaries and testis. The cell divides creating two identical cells but they only have half the DNA material. During sexual reproduction when the egg is fertilized by the sperm cell it gets half the DNA from the mother and half from the father to make a DNA sequence.
Term
Dominant Gene
Definition
The stronger of the two genes that control what the organism looks like. Brown Eyes are dominant over blue eyes
Term
Recessive
Definition
The weaker or hidden of the gene combination. Blue Eyes are recessive
