Term
What is the scientific name of canola? What family does it belong to?
Definition

Brassica napus, rapa

Part of the Brassicacea family

Term
What is the breakdown of the name canola?
Definition

Canada+oil+low acid (low erucic acid content)

Rapeseed was grown in the prairies during WW2 for its use as a lubricant for steam-powered ships. Found to breed out eurcic acid and low glucosinolates (caused canola market to grow)

Term
Where did Canola originate?
Definition

Brassica rapa - Himalayas

Brassica napus - Mediterranean

Term
Brassica napus is the result of a cross between what 2 other crucifer species?
Definition
Brassica oleraceae and Brassica rapa
Term
Why was Rapeseed oil not considered suitable for human consumption?
Definition

High eurcic acid content. Thought that this fatty acid promoted heart disease

High in glucosinolates (gives mustard it's sharp taste, but also leads to thyroid disfunction)

Term
What is meany by "single low" and "double low"?
Definition

Single low = plant varieties with low erucic acid

Double low = plant varieties with low erucic acid and low glucosinolates

Term
Why is B. juncea canola of interest to Western producers?
Definition

Meets canola standard for erucic acid and glucosinolate content

Superior drought and heat tolerance

Term
What are the 3 top producing countries of canola?
Definition

Europe

Canada (major exporter)

China

Term
Which province in Canada produces the most Canola?
Definition
Saskatchewan
Term
What are the 3 largest desinations for Canada's canola?
Definition

Japan

China

Mexico

Term
What are the different soil zones in Western Canada?
Definition

Black

- most precipitation

- high organic matter

Dark Brown

- lower rainfall

Brown

- nearly desert

Dark grey

- used for canola and spring wheat (these crops can germinate at low temperatures and withstand frosts)

Term
Why is canola adapted over a large range of lattitudes?
Definition
It is a long day plant
Term
What is "green seed"?
Definition

Results from chlorophyll in the seed not clearing or disappearing before harvest

Can also be the result of frost before maturity or harvesting too early

Term
What kind of canola hybrids are preferred?
Definition

Low FFA and high yields

(some varieties can develop free fatty acids -FFA- under hot dry conditions)

Term
What kind of canola is grown in Canada?
Definition

Spring Canola

Ability to germinate on an ice block

Term
Why is the seedbed packed before planting canola?
Definition

Want a firm seedbed for good soil-to-seed contact

Allows for control of seed depth

Term
What are the two types of canola harvesting methods?
Definition

1. Swathing

- swath canola and allow it to dry in the windrow

- combine with belt pick-up header

2. Direct combining

- seed has potential to run through header

Term
Should corn be planted after canola?
Definition

NO!

Planting corn after canola results in a corn crop that is stunted and low yielding

Canola does not support mycorrhizae, which corn needed for P uptake

Term
Why did Canola not become a major crop in Ontario?
Definition

Cool season crop (Ontario is too warm)

Soybeans took off in the targetted growing areas
