Shoot

- Several axillary leafy culms (tillers)

- Each tiller has 5-7 nodes

- Upper leaf is the flag leaf

- Each tiller produces an inflorescence (spike)

- Branching roots that re-branch to form several order of roots

Spikelet = sub-unit of the ear with several florets 

Rachis = thin axis where spikelets are located

Glume = membranous bract at the base of cereal spike

Stamen = produced pollen grains

Stigma = gandular sticky surface at tip of carpel (receives pollen)

Floret = the flower (includes lemma and palea)

Rachilla = spikelet axis

Anther = terminal part of stamen with 4 pollen sacs

Lodicules = 2 small structures below ovary. At flowering, they swell and force open the enclosing bracts

Carpel = female part of flower (includes ovary and 2 branch feathery stigma)
