Term
the purpose of this lab
Definition
to become familiar w/ 2 Software Packages for Soil Fertility and Nutrient Management
Term
UGFERTEX
Definition
an expert system designed to provide lime, fertilizer, and animal waste recommendations for a specific crop based on soil test results.
Term
The Georgia P Index
Definition
a tool to assess the risk of phosphorus loss from a field.
Term
UGFERTEX is based to a great extent on...
Definition
the Georgia Soil Testing Handbook
Term
some things UGFERTEX can do
Definition
1. Calculate N, P2O5, K2O, Ca, Mg, S, micronutrients and lime requirements for a
selected crop based on soil test results, the soil management group, and a yield
level obtainable with good management.

2. Modify the nutrient requirements based on the farmer's actual yield goal, previous
crops, and presence of irrigation.

3. Estimate P2O5 and K2O additions required to raise soil test levels the number of
index units entered by the user (the default is 0)

4. Calculate the total nutrient requirement based on 1, 2, and 3.

5. If manure is to be applied, calculate the available nutrients in manure, calculate
the rate of manure to apply, and determine the amount of additional commercial
fertilizers required.

6. Provide additional comments to aid in timing and management of nutrient
applications.

7. Provide a graphically detailed printout of the analysis and nutrient
recommendations (commercial fertilizer, manure, or combination of both) for
field records .
Term
Loss of bioavailable P to surface waters is of concern because...
Definition
it can accelerate eutrophication in lakes and streams of
the state.
Term
the main pathways of P loss that the P index considers
Definition
I) soluble P in surface runoff,
II) particulate P in surface runoff,
III) soluble P in leachate.
Term
The total risk of P loss from a
field is computed by adding...
Definition
the risk from each of the three pathways.

P Index = Risk of Sol. P in Runoff + Risk of Partic. P in Runoff + Risk of Sol. P in Leachate
Term
Water-soluble P
Definition
phosphorus that passes through a 0.45-:m filter.
Term
Particulate P
Definition
phosphorus that does not pass through a 0.45-:m filter
Term
Soluble P in Leachate
Definition
Soluble P present in water percolating through the soil profile; this can contaminate a shallow
water table or tile water directly connected to surface water.
