They tried to teach Christianity to the natives. They wanted to turn the entire world Christian. They opened up catholic schools (like with Enriquillo). In some places, like Guatemala, they combined the religions in a way. Where the religion was based on personification of nauture, they tried to combine the likenesses of the religions in festivals/particular dates/gods-saints.

The discovery of the New World, what happened?
Definition
The explorers left the Old world, initially, for two reasons: they needed materials for their products and the Turks and Muslims were were closing the ways for Europeans to get through to the East (Asia). The Portugese went around Africa. The Spanish tried to go West. When they got there, the found civilizations, like the Mayas who had very civilized and advanced lives.

What does 'Encuentros' mean in the context of the explorers.
Definition
Encuentro, basically, means a meeting. The meeting here was between two peoples (Spanish and Native Americans), two worlds (Old and New), and two cultures, including religion.

What resulted from the 'encuentro' between the two cultures?
Definition
The result was, intitially, the mixing of two cultures peacefully. New products and resources were exchanged between groups of people. Religions were shared and mixed. But eventually, the explorers demanded too much of what wasn't there's and started to conquer the groups entirely. Some like Enriqullo fought back, but ultimately, the native culture was damaged forever.
