Sum or blend of characteristics that make a person unique; Specific traits that affect a persons behavior or responses.

Three personality types
Definition
Role-Related behavior: Multiple roles where actions are based on perception of that role. Most changeable part of our personality.

Typical responses: Usual responses to stimulus in our environment. Can adjust over time, like going from mentally weak to mentally strong.

Psychological Core & Foundation: Attitudes, values and beliefs about oneself. Core life beliefs that usually come from family, friends, religion, etc. The REAL you, not who you want others to think you are.

Open Skilled vs Closed Skill Sport
Definition
Open Skilled = Sport with changing variables. Interactions with opponents and teammates where one must react to multiple factors. Examples include hockey and football.

Closed skilled = Skills taking place in a controlled environment. Performers know what to do ahead of time. Examples include golf, gymnastics, darts.

Trait vs State
Definition
Trait = Personality traits; your typical style of behavior such as being tense or happy. Type A (alpha) personalities associated with heart disease.

State = Personality fluctuates depending on the situation. Felling changes from moment to moment, such as anxiety in pressure situations.

Definition
Neuroticism - Nervousness, anxiety, emotional instability.

Extroversion- Enthusiastic, social, assertive, risk-taker, high activity level.

Openness to Experience- Original, curiosity, prefer variety, looks for adventure.

Agreeableness- modest, easily satisfied, shy, never pushes the envelope.

Conscientiousness- Disciplined, constrained, achievement striving, self-awareness.

- Refusal to accept any standard short of perfection.
- Any setback viewed as complete failure.
- Strive for flawlessness.
- Highly organized.
- Excessively high standards.
- Overly critical. "Nothing is ever good enough."
- Associated with burnout.
- Common among athletes.

Adaptive vs. Maladaptive Perfectionism
Definition
Adaptive = Motivational, always wants to get better, works hard.

Maladaptive = Negative, tries too hard, gives up easily, anxiety, too much pressure to live up to.

Definition
Degree with which an individual identifies with their athletic role, including goals, values and importance of the sport to them.

Alter Ego
Definition
Self-created persona or desired personality created to help psychologically handle the specific demands of your sport. Helps bring out the best in yourself, but can consume your true self.
