Automatic System: System 1. Involuntary response. The always-on network in our brains responding to stimuli. Makes automatic decisions, (turning our heads when we hear our names.)

Reflective System: System II- voluntary parts of our brains. Processes suggestions offered by automatic system. Makes final decisions and chooses where to allocate our attention.

Sensory Distractions: Things happening around you.

Emotional Distractions: Your inner dialogue. Thoughts about events in your life.

Associative vs Dissaciative strategies
Definition
Associative Strategy: Monitor body functions, heart rate, breathing, tension, form. Correlated with faster running performances.

Dissociative Strategy: Distraction and tuning out (daydreaming.) Does not increase probability of injury, decreases fatigue and boredom while increasing enjoyment and frequency.

Definition
The sleep cycle is 90 minutes.

There are five stages in the sleep cycle.

REM Sleep is stage five. People typically wake up after this stage or start the cycle over.
