Term
Easing In
Definition
A practice of having children gradually enter an early childhood program.  The child has an introductory visit to the classroom, teachers may conduct a home visit, the child first stays a few hours, then half a day, then through early afternoon, then all day.  Easing in takes time--up to a few weeks-- and may create difficulties for families, but the benefits to children are great, as children learn to trust and feel comfortable in the new setting.
Term
Separation Anxiety
Definition
Feelings of distress by children and parents when removed from each other's presence.  Because of the attachment between parent and child, they feel more comfortable when they are together; when they are separated they become concerned, and behaviorial changes are common.
Term
Parting Ritual
Definition
A routine parents use every day when dropping children off at child care, designed to make separation easier.  Examples of parting rituals include blowing a kiss at the door, children "pushing" parents out the door, planting a kiss in the palm to "save" for later.
