In The Red Candle was promised to a wealthy family, when her families house was destroyed they left her to go live with her future husband and his family. Her new mother was a bitch. Her husband refused to sleep with her and she was blamed for a lack of children. She made a plan and was set free due to a mix up with the red candle meant to represent the young marriage.

In The Rules of The Game she boasts about Waverly's success in chess due to her pride in her daughter.

In Four Directions is thought to see the worst in everything and not accept Rich, Waverly's fiance.

In Double Face she reveals how she met Tin, her second husband, and how they came to be wed through fortune cookies.

In Ther Voice from the Wall builds a invisible wall between her and her daughter. Becomes pregnant and has a miscarriage, though she knew this even before the child was concieved.

In Waiting Between the Trees reveals that she fell for a man at a very young age and he impregnated her with a son. Soon after he began to see other women, and in her grief and pain over this she aborted her baby. Afterwards she went to work as a shop lady where she met her future husband, Clifford. Claimed that she was a Tiger lady and was golden until that first man broke her heart, when she turned black.

In Rice Husband put fear into her daughter's heart over the appearence of her future husband and later went to stay with her daughter and saw that her marriage was falling apart.

In The Voice form the Wall feared the world around her and observed the way her mother fell apart at the loss of her child. Heard the neighbors on the other side of the wall fighting and she told herself at least she was better off than that girl, but came to find out she was actually rather worse off.

In Rice Husband was told by her mother that her husband would have a pock on his face for every unfinished piece of rice, fearing that her future husband was a boy she despised she went to great lengths to give that boy so many pocks it killed him. Well, that boy did die, and not really at the hands of Lena, upon hearing this she ate a whole thing of ice cream then forced herself to throw it up. As her mother comes to stay with her, far in the future she fears her mom will she the bad in her marriage. Everything between she and her husband, Harold, is even and this angers the mother when she finds that Lena is being made to pay for ice cream she does not eat, As the vase falls and breaks she finds that her marriage is falling apart.
